I recently visited Rochester for an interview. I drove around and visited Webster, Fairport, Pittsford, East Rochester, Brighton, and some areas of the city- East Ave and areas near URMC. I did not make it to the West Side Villages or spend much time in Irondequoit. Obviously, I have apartment/townhome preferences. But, can you tell me which West Side communities I might like? I love the historic villages and want a sense of community. I’d love to stick with a 20 min commute!
Yes, Brockport. I would also add Spencerport. They are both fairly similar canal towns, except Brockport is much larger and includes a college. Another "village" that might interest you is Charlotte, in the city of Rochester, by the harbor. It's not really a village as it is a whole bunch of bars and restaurants. Lots of history, and you're at the harbor and the beach, and summers are great.
I would highly recommend Brockport. You said, "I love the historic villages and want a sense of community." That is exactly how I would describe Brockport to someone who's never been or considering moving here. Having the college here really adds a nice mix of diversity, not to mention you have a Wegmans, Wal-Mart, Lowes, Runnings, great family owned restaurants, fast-food, and a cool little movie theater all right here. Plus they just finished a big project on Rte 31/531 that makes commuting to and from the city a breeze. Hamlin Beach State Park is only a few miles away which I think is the best beach in the area. Plus its nice being on the Westside since you are only an hour away from another major metro area (Buffalo). Let me know if you have anymore questions!
Just curious- how long of a commute to Strong from Brockport?
You'd be looking at about a 25-30 minute commute from Brockport to Strong Memorial. Obviously if there is an accident it might add a little extra time. However, I commute from Brockport to the Westside of Rochester everyday (during rush-hour) and it rarely takes me more than 30 mins. to get to work/back home.
West side villages you might like would be Spencerport, not too far off from 531 and within a half hour of various shopping areas on the western portion of Monroe County. I'm from Fairport so I like being close to 490.
