My mom-in-law came to visit a couple months ago and just like us, she fell in love with the Rochester area and the Finger Lakes. She is seriously considering moving here and something she's talked about for years is downsizing to a "tiny house." My husband and I think the tiny house idea might be more fun in her imagination than it would actually be in real life, but of course we support whatever she wants to do. An alternative option we want to present to her is a patio home community. She doesn't want to live in an attached condo / apartment.

Please let me know if there is a general area you think would work well for a tiny home (available land, preferably wooded not fully cleared, where these structures are legal for permanent residence) and also tell me about nice patio home communities with smaller sq footage homes and outdoor maintenance included with hoa fee. Mother-in-law is 65 so could be a 55+ community but doesn't have to be. What she really wants is a tiny home community but I don't know if that exists at all around here.

I'm not aware of any tiny home communities in our area. I don't believe they are legal, but I believe I've heard talk of changing the building and zoning codes somewhere in the city.

There are plenty of "over 55" communities with detached single family homes in most towns.

Another option might be a double house, or a home with an "in law" apt attached.

That's a very interesting idea JWRocks... We are going to (hopefully) be buying a home this coming Spring / Summer and maybe that's a direction we should consider.
