I am from Chico Ca I wont to move to a smoll town in eastcost , like verginia ,north carolina,NewJersy.my husbond is a pharmacist and we have two kids 8 and 5.we are looking for safe and quit town to live in.any suggestions Please
Do you prefer mountains, seacoast, or piedmont areas ? Do you prefer being in a college or university town ? (either for education, or just for the general culture) A warm or cold climate ? Near airports ? Near shopping ? Near large hospitals ? A conservative or a liberal political climate ? Certain types of outdoor recreation ? Are any of these factors important to you ?
You mentioned New Jersey, it has very high taxes, although some of its schools are excellent.
There are many publications that analyze and "rank" different towns. These include
- the Rand McNally "places rated almanac" available in large bookstores (updated annually)
- "Money" magazine, does this annually
- "Progressive Farmer" magazine ranks the best small towns (updated annually)
- "Retirement Life /Living(?)" magazine, available in large bookstore
You may be able to find some of these rankings / lists by googling these publications' websites.
Most of Maine is rural and very safe, plus it has some great vistas and scenery along the ocean. Cost Of Living is also much lower than most of the rest of the East Coast region.

Along the coast it's not so rural, and the cost of living is fairly high. Maine also has a high tax burden compared with many other states. It's not, however, as expensive as New Jersey.
I would agree that it's a beautiful place, and very safe.

From the mid-coast area South it isn't very rural, but from shortly past MDI up to Eastport/Pleasant Point it isn't exactly crowded either. Down East has quite a few rural areas along the coast. COL is a lot lower in those areas than just about anywhere South along the coast, clear down to FL. I lived in Maine for 20 years, taxes are indeed higher than a lot of places. As long as you don't try to buy directly on the water, it isn't real bad for cost compared to the more crowded sections.
