Hey, Everyone! ( I'm not sure if I'm doing this right- I'm new!)
But I'm wondering if anyone has any advice about sharecropping hay in east central MN. I think the guy who has been cutting my 18 acres has been taking advantage of my farming naivete (I'm a hobby farmer with horses that moved into a rural area from the Twin Cities a few years ago). I just want to make sure I'm not being taken advantage of or taking advantage of anyone...I just want it to be fair for everyone involved. The guy I have cutting for me currently is giving me one third of the total yield and that seems more than fair to me, yet my former hay guy was only getting me about 20 big rounds (which I HATE- I have to call him to move them for me and his wife gets crabby when I call...) per year. Any suggestions? It's really important to me to be honest with people, but I want to get a fair deal for myself and my family, too.

70/30 or 60/40 split is about right. If you are not happy with the big squares, perhaps ask him if he can do your share in the small squares, perhaps offer him a bigger share if he is willing to do this for you. If not look for another guy looking for hay. Your area is full of small dairies if memory serves me and they are always looking for quality hay.

---"and they are always looking for quality hay"--

The OP never stated what kind of hay he had growing.

I just retired from dairy farming, and if I was putting up my share in round bales, I would be willing to bale small squares for the owner, but I never would stack and unload and stack in a barn---HIS--share.
