I was just reading on another thread about someone asking about private schools. I came across a reply that struck me as "odd". The person said, in their opinion, that "the private school was full of kids w/ADHD & other issues".

My son has ADHD & Tourette Syndrome (vocal & facial tics). We have tried all the medications out there & none of it helped. We have been very lucky that our school system has done everything to help him in his school life! Even better is, his peers all seem to accept him "as is". They have even helped him when he needs it. Say what you will about kids, but they can be so compassionate when they want to be. My son has never felt "less than" or felt that he was "different" from his peers because he has these issues. His teachers have been awesome, some more than others. Aside from not liking homework , he looks forward to going to school & see his friends & even some of his teachers. He gets good grades & I think that speaks volumes for the school & teachers itself!

We will be moving out to UT this summer. I'm more worried about finding a good school fit for him & him making some new friends that will look past his "issues" & just see him. We have visited UT & I found that not only the sights are nice, but the people were really nice also. I'm hoping that we find the same thing in UT as we have/had here in MA. I'm pretty sure that we will.

Here's my question: to all the parents who have kids w/issues, have you found that your child was more or less "shunned" by their peers?

I know that kids will be kids, that not everyone will be friends w/him. I just want to be sure that they get to see him before they "pass judgement" on him.

Thank you for " listening" to a mom's rambling!

A friend has a son with AD/HD and she has been most unhappy with the public schools. There is not good support in all schools but fortunately, you can ask for a transfer and if the school is not full, your child can go elsewhwere. Of course, then you are responsible for transportation.

His middle school principal and teachers did not believe in AD/HD even though he had an IEP. She battled with them and eventually transferred him. He is now a senior at his local high school.

I have heard that the Jordan school district is the best for special needs kids but that was a few years ago, before the budget cuts. I would call the schools of the areas you are looking at and inquire about their accomodations.

SouthernBelleInUtah,

Thank you for your response. We were under the impression that the Davis School District was a goos one for kids w/ADHD. We were looking @: Bountiful, Farmington & Layton to settle in. Do you have any opinion on any of those places?
