According to the city's fine schedule, violation 0044S "Crossing at other than crosswalks" carries a total fine of $162.10.

LOL ridiculous. Where are all of the pro-ticketers that are normally on this board?

I can't believe the fine is 162 dollars. When I read the topic title, I thought it was a joke. Jaywalking? Seriously?

After a little research, I've decided to ask for an adjournment or continuance for my original court date of Nov. 18th .....because.....(I kid you not) I have two doctor appointments (spread apart) on that same day! I am going to bring printouts with me from both doctors as part of my request to the clerk.

I am also going to say that's it's my only day off during the week (which it will be) so I won't be able to reschedule doctor appointments because I will have to wait one month for my PCP and another 2 months or so for my other specialist doctor for which I did have to wait 2 months just to get that appointment.

So..... I will ask for a continuance/adjournment to delay the court date and increase the chances that the new continuance/adjournment date will conflict with the officer's schedule.

If he does show up, I will admit guilt, but request that the fine be reduced in half. I'm also going to dress very well.

What's the worst that can happen? I pay the fine in full; that's already going to happen if I don't at least attempt to fight it.

Wish me luck.

I'm right here. Jaywalking IS illegal - and has been for decades. It's a dangerous habit to get into, and can get you killed and/or cause an accident by the person trying to avoid you. I'm understanding of that, and support ticketing for same.....but NOT at $162.

Good luck, I hope you can get that fine reduced. IMO, it's excessive. And in San Antonio, it's not necessarily safer to cross at a crosswalk. Between the morons and the drunks, it's hard to determine how to keep yourself safe.

This whole post just boiled my blood. Again, incompetent cops pulling their weight around and harassing people. I am a human being. This is the WORLD. We are children of the world, and being allowed to WALK (the one method of transportation independent of anything else, unless we're handicapped) wherever the HELL we want provided that we are not trespassing on private property should be an inalieanable right.

That means that when we cross a street when there aren't ANY cars at all, we should be able to do so and NOT be harassed and have some incompetent punk steal our money via citations.

IF, on the other hand, some moron is walking across a busy street and making people slam on their brakes and take evasive action a la Gabe Trevino, then cite him for jaywalking. Leave the people doing it SAFELY alone.

And I know you'll pull out the argument that it turns into a habit that leads to getting hit by a car. Sorry, pal, but the only HABIT ingrained in those people that jaywalk safely is looking both ways before crossing the street, at ANY point.

And that link with the 15-year-old girl? Boiled my blood. Absolutely pathetic.

The one with the officer ticketing the student does show that police are disconnected from the communities they serve. It is not a practice or profession, just business now.

@ xsa210tx were you in your security uniform when ticketed? Also is not deffered disposition/adjudication allowed for your ticket? If so it will be dropped clean from your record if you do not get any other tickets in the future.

According to some breaking the law is breaking the law...jaywalking or speeding 5 miles over...I'm surprised by all the sympathy being displayed. This board usually is full of law abiding, no room for exceptions kinda folk.

IMO, the jaywalking ticket is BS, unless you were prohibiting traffic from moving. I hope you can beat it altogether or at least get your ticket reduced. Good luck.

Agreed.....someone else posted something about how the crosswalks are not always the safest places to cross. *I* have also noticed that too myself and thusly agree.....

In certain ways, for years now I have also felt this way about Police/Community relations.....some things are just getting increasingly way sore with time, methinks.....
