Babcock and Huebner: It's an HEB! (Graham, Center: section 8, apartments, to buy)

We've discussed what was going up on Babcock and Huebner. Some said HEB, some said apartments.

Well, it has an HEB sign.

Implications - stocked with fancy stuff that will go away in awhile.
What about traffic - is Babcock being redone for access?
What about the big box across the street? That's a kind of crappy shopping center - level it? Or what?

We will see.

I don't think anything traffic or building wise will change. They are doing all that construction at Babcock right after Huebner which is ongoing. I don't see that the traffic should be an issue there at all. It's been that way for too long and it's too close to Huebner to need a light...unless they develop it like De Zavala near Wal-Mart.

Those buildings are pretty crappy but don't expect a massive paradigm shift or anything in the area because there isn't much other new development in the area. Apartments, housing and other stores have been there since the late 80s and the income levels have stayed pretty normal lower middle class to middle middle class. There hasn't been a shift to upper middle class or anything to indicate new growth in the area.

I'm glad that we're going to get a new HEB, it will be another option, but who knows.

I for one am very glad its finally being built. The old store sucks. Even before they added about 4 more rows by squeezing the isles together, it has been jam packed with people. Add some section 8 housing rejects, retirement crowd over 90 dropping people off by the bus load to dooder around and clerks asking "do you want to buy some toothpaste/shampoo/horsehair, it's on sale" and its never a good experience.

I miss Albertsons. And forget grocery shopping all Target or WalMart. I welcome a larger store.
So there.

But yeah, is spite of Medical Center $$ or maybe because of, this area of SATX is going down fast.

Albertson's was too pricey. Too dumb to price compete.

You are right about the old store. It's really bad. The area has a dual nature. Med complex and poor. The older apartments attract such.

Have you been in that HEB? It is gross, like a lot of other people said. It's like climbing over your fellow shoppers to get to things. It's either renovate it to make it better or relocate it. To keep it inline with the current business model it was probably better to move it across the street. The building may remain empty for a bit but look at what the Albertson's building down the way turned into. It's a huge office building now. It's probably worth more now than it was when it was a grocery store.

While i agree with you to an extent, business is business and if this is your biggest worry in the world then you don't have that hard of a life.
