So, after 9 years of amazing service, my housekeeper is retiring and I'm unsure of where to go for someone new, reliable, honest and a meticulous cleaner. In the past, I've had unsavory experiences with large-scale services like Merry/Molly Maids... They didn't so much clean as they just straightened up. It was expensive and not worth it.

Anyone have advice, recommendations or words of wisdom?

We found a good one through Care.com. Costs to sign on, but we got easily a half-dozen folks to choose from with references.

Maybe your (now retired) housekeeper has some suggestions? After all she knows where your place is and what the job entails, maybe she knows someone that would like to take it on. I don't know, worth a try if you haven't asked already.

Sounds like you have the same person we have. She told me last week that she was retiring. Damn....She was great. We also had bad luck with everyone we had before her. She has been with us for probably 7-8 years. I knew it was inevitable but I know it will be tough to replace her. I can't believe that more people don't get into this. I know she made a very good living.
I agree with the problems with the large services. We also had problems with theft a couple of times.

Feel like sharing? LOL

Every housekeeper we've found through Craigslist either doesn't work weekends (sort of a requirement for us) or wants to start no later than 2-3PM.

The issue for us is, we don't get home until almost 5PM, which at that point we want to make dinner for the kids and get them ready for bed.

I also don't want to leave the housekeeper unattended for the first time in my house either.

If anyone has any suggestions, please shoot me a DM. I've already looked through Craglist and care.com

Shannon's stuck out today with me. They did an 'intro' cleaning, attempting to get my whole loft done in 2 hours (4500 sq ft). Ridiculous what they called 'cleaning,' never touching the blinds, baseboards or doing anything other than just straightening up.

Luckily, it was cheap ($30/hr). Lesson learned: Don't rehire Shannon's Housekeeping.

OH EM GEE!! TOTALLY STRUCK OUT WITH ME TOO!! And my home is nowhere NEAR the size of yours! When I came home it REEKED of bleach and dirty dishrag. I was super pissed! She didn't do half of the items I asked for her to do, a dirty master RR shower, swept the carpet instead of vacuumed (WTH?) and basically shoved things into a corner. I left a message on their voice mail Friday late afternoon, but who knows if they will call me back. It seemed like she ran out of time and hurried thru what she could; I booked her for 6 hours because I explained that there would be a lot to do. If they couldn't do it all in that timeframe, they shouldnt have quoted me that time. I will NEVER use their service again.....
