Where the meat comes from? A private farm?
Swan's is an established company, but I don't think OP is referring to them.

I'm remembering years back (20) when I was married, I was at work during the day, and my then wife was at home on her day off, bought a box of T Bone steaks (about 6) and pork chops (about 10) from the meat pirates, and surprisingly were good except that the further down the box you got, the thinner the steaks got. She talked them down to about $50 back then.

My mom bought a huge set of meat (I would guess about 10 boxes) from a guy in a green pickup truck about 10 years ago when we lived outside Houston. Surprisingly it was good from what I remember. Thats no endorsement for anyone else to buy meat from a random truck that doesn't say Schwans. lol

He's referring to the guys in the little unmarked trucks with a cooler in the bed ....

The ones that just made their last delivery and the person wasn't at home, so it's your lucky day and you get that delivery at a significant savings.. Ironically this happens very often and the story never changes.

Seen it a few times.. here and other places. Schwanns or a legit company with a real refrigerater-freezer truck with printed literature and all is one thing, but back of a pickup truck in ice chests is quite another. Seen both, and sometimes the product in the latter looked like it may have fallen off the truck of the former...

Well, if they can sell dogs out of the back of pick-up trucks, why not meat?!?

Not sure what side of town you are on but it happened to me over by Sea World. They came a knocking and dude asked me if I wanted to buy some steaks. As I looked at his jalopy of a Ford Ranger with a freezer rigged on the back of it I told him no thanks. He then offered me a deal and I told him I do not eat meat. He kept persisting and I again told him I do not eat meat. He stormed off and went on his way. I thought to myself what a shady situation. But then I again I question everything.

With the drought and all of the ranchers having to sell their herds at not so good prices at the stock yards we may start seeing a lot of this. Many people would rather take them in, have them butchered and try to sell them meat directly to consumers than sell them for next to nothing at auction. I'm sure it's a hard sell since prospective customers really don't know where this meat came from, how it was raised or what shape the cow was in at slaughter. And go figure, these are probably ranchers not salesmen. I feel for them but without knowing any of these things, I wouldn't buy.
