My husband and I may be relocating next month to SA and are looking into the houses for rent on Brooks AfB. Is this a good neighborhood? I like the close proximity to the baptist hospital since I'm due in June with our second child. I have a toddler so parks and activities nearby is a huge plus. A low crime rate is most important. Any info would help me out a lot!

It's a very small community. Probably fairly mixed at this time with all the development and changes going on. Still appears to be a quiet oasis though to me. They have a nice playground for the kids too. Many apartments going up just around the corner on New Braunfels as well. Those are duplexes in Heritage Oaks. Mission Trail Hospital is just behind it (south).

Landings at Brooks City-Base, The Apartments, 7803 S. New Braunfels San Antonio, TX - Apartments for Rent on ApartmentGuide.com | San Antonio Texas | 177939

All the amenities are very, very, close at hand. Shopping , Restaurants etc. Walking distance in fact.

It's former military housing, so no frills but defiantly affordable. I've been working at Brooks City Base for the last 5 years and can tell you that this immediate area is growing. There's a larger selection of restaurants and shopping than when I first started. Since the city took over Brooks AFB (now called Brooks City Base), this area has started to take off. The hospital is new and very nice.

With that said, the area just outside BCB is not a good area of town. Not the worst area of town, just older and has it's fair share of gang bangers. It's great for going to lunch/shopping during the day but not somewhere you want to be after dark (lots of shootings recently near Military and Pleasanton and home/business thefts). Like I said, not the worst area of town but something you should consider. Also, if you're into upscale shopping and fine dining, you're in the wrong area of town.

If you have any specific questions I'll be happy to give you my honest opinion.

That said, I'd still feel just about as safe as anywhere in general in this area. Military drive being a major thoroughfare, sees a mix of the good, bad, and ugly of course as does any other. I lived around this area all my life. ...as for fine dining (how fine?) Roadhouse, Cracker Barrel etc. ain't bad.

That park looks awesome! thanks for the advice! I appreciate it. We've lived in army housing before in Kentucky and it was not pleasant. These actually look nice and comfortable. I have a cousin who is a police officer and he said it wasn't a bad area but to watch out for car thefts and basically at night things are bad all over SA. I am hoping to put the deposit down next week. I can't wait to get back into Texas! My daughter will love the parks.
