Our 6 year old Sears water softener is apparently in dire straights...

It's not providing soft water, yet is using salt. The repair guy says it's due to the resin gone bad...

While this sounds reasonable to me, can anyone shed some light?

You should be able to get the resin recharged. Call a plumber for a better explanation though.

I've been doing a lot of research on water softeners - chlorine in the water will eventually break down the resin beads. The resin probably needs to be replaced. A plumber can do this for you for $150 or so, or you can buy the resin and replace it yourself for $10 or so. A search on the internet will give you lots of info

Yes, we suspected the chlorine. Plumbers are quoting in the $250 range(!). I don't know that ours (Sears) is a refill-able type. It is frustrating that the resin is so cheap!

It's not a complicated process, I'm surprised it costs so much. Try calling qualitywaterassociates.com
They may be able to walk you through the process. Good luck!
