I live on the southwest side, near 1604 and Marbach. My neighborhood was built recently and so were several of the others nearby. A lot of my neighbors are military (military folks generally make great neighbors).

The crime we see in our neighborhood is generally property crime (houses or cars getting broken into) or graffiti. I've lived in other parts of town and don't feel any more or less safe on the southwest side. I'm happy with my house and my neighborhood.

410 and 90 not so much. 16504 and 90 maybe okay as Hedgehog_Mom said. The closer to 410 on 90 you et the sketchier. Search for the zipcode (*I believe 78228, 78242 and 78245 are in the area) to get more info.

The new neighborhoods are fine. It's the neighborhoods with second generation or later owners that are full of renters and kids that cause most of the problems.
