Heads up to anyone that subscribes to the Express News (if my wife didn't insist on it, we wouldn't......)

Got a post card from them today, advising me that effective October 23, we'd be receiving "Spurs Nation Weekly Magazine" in our Sunday paper - for an additional $1 per week! Needless to say, I was ready to grab the phone when I noticed the VERY fine print at the bottom:

Subscribers may chose to opt out of receiving Spurs Nation Weekly Magazine. Please visit mySA.com/HomeDelivery[account number on reverse] or call 210-250-2000, option 6.

Yeah - I called, punched 6, waded through all the follow-through instructions to tell them NOT to send/bill me for something I NEVER ordered in the first place.

Was VERY tempted to just toss the card, then challenge them to PROVE I was ever notified or agreed to the charges. Talk about slimy business moves!

Nothing is beneath them these days. They're gasping their last breath.

I saw a street vendor for the E-N holding up a sign a few Sundays ago that read: Sunday Express-News $3 here, or pay $4 at HEB or Walmart.

The last time I bought a Sunday E-N at HEB, it was $2 (like a year ago, maybe?), with a notice it was going up to $3 the next Sunday. I had a home delivery subscription for many years before giving it up a few years ago, due to unreliable delivery, and other issues, mostly involving the direction they were taking with their content, the specifics of which I won't get into here.

I voluntarily subscribed to the Spurs Nation supplement last year, partly for myself and partly for another family member. I liked it OK. I felt like we got our money's worth.

When I read that they were automatically subscribing people to it this year, I suspected it would annoy many subscribers. If I didn't like the Spurs, I wouldn't want to pay extra to read about them either and I wouldn't be happy about being made to opt out of doing so.

That was my biggest issue, Bo - having to "opt out" of it. I dislike that kind of "selling".

I see no need for a "newspaper" you pay for that can't tell you the story as it really happened and anything it has to say is just old history. The story or fib is going to be at least 12 hours old and more. Considering most folks have internet now, the news is almost instant. Maybe biased so bad it doesn't look like the truth but it's pretty quick. Kinda like carrying a pager, you need to move into the 21st century and put the horse out to pasture. How about gettin' schoolmarm a subscription to Texas Monthly instead?

They did the same thing to my mom with another section of the paper. They didn't even warn her before billing her for a new section she didn't want, and it took several calls to get it undone.

You mean I threw away this "opportunity" post card along with a dozen other offers?

Yeah - but if you DON'T call, they're going to charge you a dollar a week more for your paper.
