Demolition has begun at the site of the 54,000 sf. 300 Houston mixed-use project. The company that owns the project has said it will include retail (including 16,500 sf. Walgreens) and offices for the nearby Nix Medical Center.

I like this, but I'd like it even more if it were 3 or 4 stories with lofts over the offices and retail.

I agree... I'm really confused. I thought they were going to build 3-4 stories to include office space and apartments above the Walgreens. Seems like a missed opportunity to add density downtown. Does anyone know what the story is there? It's times like these that I actually miss Insomniac/210. LOL.

I'm guessing the desire was to have that whole block of Houston Street maintain the same overall building height. The building looks good overall, but that elevator/ stair tower at the back is a little goofy.

I do miss Insomniac's posts on upcoming construction - made for some good lunch discussion with my downtown co-workers.

Interesting, but it doesn't look a whole lot different to what's there now.

So did the Walgreen's close? Has it moved somewhere else? I haven't been in awhile, but it was a convenient walk on the weekends if I needed something....there's no other drug store downtown.

The Walgreens closed temporarily so they could build a new building to house the Walgreens as the old building was too old and unstable.

Old and unstable only in the eyes of the developer. The structural report never said that the building needed to be torn down - only that some minor repairs needed to be made. I'm not a "save every old building because it's old" kinda guy, but I think the only reason it was torn down was because it did not fit the current business model for Walgreens. It wasn't a significant building in my opinion so I'm not going to miss it, but I'll bet that the new Walgreens won't be able to last a hundred years like the old one did.
