My MIL's tomatoes look to be really close... and we have packets of seeds in the garage, looks like maybe we'll plant some. But not sure how they'll do in this heat!

I think it's kind of late to start tomatoes now given the heat, but you can try!

Ours aren't doing so well, I finally figured it's too much sun. I always thought they liked sun, but in this heat and getting full sun all day, they don't do so well. We won't bother this year, but next year I'll put a shade cloth over the garden to help break the rays a bit.

Chaka, with all the shade you have, can't you move them? I really hate when you buy something that says full sun on it, but they mean like full Colorado sun, or full New Hampshire sun. They don't really mean full South Central Texas sun. Even my hibiscus have been knocking on my door to be let in!! They get so weepy--luckily they are all in pots and I can shuffle them around.

I thought that shady area would have too much shade. It only gets a few hours of sun/day....

We have them planted in the ground. They've never done fabulously, although last year they weren't too bad (the year before they were starting to come alive just as my daughter was born and we spent 3 weeks in NICU and neglected the garden). It was only this year I realized it was probably the heat. My dad grows amazing tomatoes in CA in full sun, but I guess it's the 'dry heat'

How much sun do they really need? I'd love to plant our garden where it's shady, but I don't want to do all pots. I already have all the herbs in pots.

I don't do tomatoes--although I just bought a little tomato plant this weekend that I am keeping in a pot on my patio. It's mostly shady and looks ok so far.

I think Snappy Bob is the tomato guru. I bet if you DM him he'd help you out. You hate to just let them go!!

I saw a sign at Chipotle today that said it's only Roma tomatoes.

dont be surprised dude the way things are right now, they are saving their butts from a law suit.

I doubt this salmonella gigg IMO its another reason to increase food prices, and we are falling for it. I remember when I used to pay 99 cents for 5lbs of tomatoes
