I thought when we were having our house built that we could have the hole dug for a free form pool and then finish it later. Anyone out there ever done that on acreage? It is fairly rocky but when the crew is out digging for the foundation why couldn't we have him dig a hole and cover it and finish it later with the spray in concrete over rebar etc... Thoughts? we really want a pool for everyone but 40K is way too much for us.

Check with your local officials, but it strikes me that it would likely be a violation of the building code to have a pool-sized hole on your lot that you intend to finish out some years down the road.

Plus if you get one good rain, you're going to have a problem. $40K is a conservative estimate too.

Default Let me explain

I just wondered if any of you had ever DIY'd a pool. We would be doing this WHILE construction of the house was progressing, not waiting until after it was finished. Sorry for my bad post. I have painted a cement pool with that NASTY epoxy system you have to use, yuck, the fumes! I have also worked a little with the cement, my son is a engineer and also a welder, father-in-law electrician and husband used to landscape for a living, waterfalls were nothing for him to create. Codes in Comal county are almost non existent and we are on unrestricted acreage. Just wondered if anyone ever tried this themselves and would do it again???????

I have not done this of course, but it's interesting that you posted this because recently I've been looking up pictures of natural looking pools and found a website by a person that did their own stone/rock pool with a kit of some kind. I was so jealous. It's not in my future but I drool all the same!

Default Ohhhh!!! Thanks

Ohhh, Ahhh that gets my heart racing! Thanks for that link! I have seen people do their own pools on TV on the show "Look What I Did" and there were some awesome pools. I feel confident that we could one with the right guidance and thought that the dig would be cheaper when the crews were there to prep the land and pour the foundation. I also thought that the access would be better for the digging before the house was up. If there are any contractors out there feel free to correct me! Expert help is the best help...
