Hello, I didn't find anything current so started a new thread.

Basically I went to a new to me dentist since I had not been to a dentist in a few years after my regular dentist retired. I had a couple of crowns that had come off and was beginning to experience a bit of pain in the area. The dentist said I would need 2 root canals in the 2 and 3 molars respectively and referred me to an endodontist that they work with. I have spoken to Root Canal Specialist office but they estimate it will run me $1300-$1400 each for the root canals.

Since I am self pay, that's a decent expense to deal with. Has anyone had experiences with other endodontists that aren't quite as expensive? I"ve called around and gotten some cheaper quotes but thought I'd ask on here as well. Thanks.

You may want to look into the student dental clinic at UT Health Science Center here in San Antonio. Students, under the supervision of faculty members, perform dental services at (usually) discounted prices. The student clinic is not always able to take on certain patients, but it might help to give them a call.

From the website:

If you visit our Pre-Doctoral Clinic, you will pay a $13 fee for a screening to determine if your dental needs can be served by the student doctors. We estimate that your charges for the services you receive after the screening will be about 68 percent lower than you would pay at a private practice, according to a comparison with prices listed in the National Dental Advisory Service 2014 Comprehensive Fee Report.

Our advanced graduate clinics, where you receive treatment by dental residents (licensed dentists pursuing advanced training), also has prices lower than what you would pay at a private practice. Services at these clinics come with prices that are about 33 percent lower than you would pay at a private practice, according to a comparison with prices listed in the 2014 NDAS fee report.

At our Faculty Clinics, you'll receive treatment from experienced, board-certified, licensed dentists who also teach at the School of Dentistry. The fees for services performed by dentists from the faculty are similar to those you will pay at a private practice, according to a comparison with prices listed in the 2014 NDAS fee report.

Molar endodontics is expensive. Go with someone good, not cheap. If you go for the lowest fee, you will risk possibly losing the teeth or having to have an endodontist re-treat the root canals, adding to the expense. I would recommend Kade Roundy at La Cantera Endodontics. As I tell people all the time...you get what you pay for. There is a dentist on Huebner with his fees on his sign. If you were to look up his disciplinary history with the State Board of Dental Examiners you would see why his fees are so low. You get what you pay for.
