Hubby and I were dying for a bagel this morning....pretty much impossible to get here in San Antonio! So, of course, I turn to the trusty SA-CD for recommendations. We learned that a Chicago Bagel store is the closest location to us (Potranco/1604 area next door to a Domino's pizza). So...off we go to give it a try. Have to say, this place really needs to try harder! We had to look twice to see for sure if it was even still open for business! Tables and chairs for customers had actually been pushed aside and stacked into a corner and the owner's (?) old, worn out furniture is in the store front window with a
"For Sale" sign on it ! When we entered, the place was empty except for owner/mgr. and a woman sitting in a chair (think it was the wife) that had been covered with a throw or blanket of some kind, next to one of the tables with the tv remote within reach! (Frasier was playing on TV.) I would say the floor had not been swept in the past few days. We ordered a bagel each and sat at a table to eat. For a "bagel" place we really expected a larger variety, but the bagels we ordered did taste great and fresh! I hope they are doing better business at other times of day, otherwise I don't know how they'll make it. Oh well...I guess they are doing okay, because after all, they ARE still there. But I would have to cast my vote for a GOOD BAGEL PLACE TO COME TO SAN ANTONIO!!!!!! (yeah, I know about Big Apple....but too far a drive for me.)

I would agree with you. I wrote to Panera and told them they should consider this part of town to put their next store. They basically told me the next one would be somewhere near I-10 or something. I wasn't happy. I don't know why more places don't come to our part of town!

If bagels are hard to come by in your area, you may want to just buy them at the store. I find that the ones in the frozen section are more authentic than the ones of the shelf. Good bagels should be chewy, not soft/cakey like bread.

I'm no specialist, but the bread aisle at HEB+ has plenty for me to choose from...I know it's not anywhere near as good, but I'd rather do that than go back to Chicago Bagel...
