April 5, 1917 was the opening of the Aviation Camp. The name was changed to Kelly Field and then to Kelly Air Force Base. Kelly is the oldest continually operating air base in the USA.

Awesome, imagine being here to see the first four planes fly across from Ft. Sam to Aviation Camp?

I am wondering if Kelly (still is -or- was?) the oldest continually operating air base in the USA since it officially closed in 2001?

The article that mentioned the base being the oldest air base was published in 1995, so there is your answer.

A friend of mind left his hometown of San Antonio to follow his job up to Oklahoma City/Tinker AFB in 2001 and he came back to San Antonio after retiring 2 years ago. He could not wait to come back but his daughter who went to live with him got married and wound up staying up there to raise her family.

I am curious how many people transferred to other air force bases in the country. I understand many people relocated from San Antonio/Kelly AFB to Oklahoma City/Tinker AFB like my friend. Did anyone here make that move or was offered a position up there? Did you go, did you stay and did you eventually come back?
