The hair was probably the insect, the smell however....

The pics on this page look very close to what I had in my garage. Apparently, it was a horse fly:

Horse Fly - Tabanus sulcifrons

The one in my garage was slighty darker, but the pics are close. Some of what I've read mentioned that the horse fly can get as large as 1-1/4 inches. I'd say mine was at LEAST 1" long.

I didn't think about it until today, but I should have put it in a ziplock bag, and taken pictures. Oh well... I just hope there won't be any more of these buggers! Yes...I said BUGGERS!

Yeah, it sucks getting bitten by horseflies. From someone who shoveled lots of horse crap in his younger years.

If you do, I'll take the flies after you photograph them. My sons have a Venus Fly Trap and a Pitcher Plant, and they need flies to feed them.

I went outside a bit ago to my driveway, where I left the fly. It's gone... Somewhere out there is a very happy bird. Or cat.
