No, thats a lie. The one in Alamo heights is nice. You even get a view.

I say, instead of whining about the lack of gyms here, hit Austin like everyone on the board recommends LOL.

But I do have to say they are missing a whole lot of gyms here. LA fitness, 24 hour...those are the most popular. I was going to cancel Bally and go to 24 Hour but turns out they dont have one. Im not too picky about gyms though. As long as they have the basics, Im good to go. Maybe in the future I'll feel a need to do yoga, ballet, and indoor rock climbing...Im not going to pay $100 a month for stuff Im not using.

As for the comment re: "everyone here is fat, gyms should be a multi-billion dollar business in SA"....LOL. Why do you think they're fat in the 1st place? If anything, Im surprised there are actually ANY gyms here.

I'm sure the only reason why they are here is to cater to the retired military population. You go to places like El Paso, forget it. Just be prepared to put on the bacon.

Don't forget the YMCA gyms - several around town. Haven't checked them out yet.

I know UIW has a small but nice gym in their wellness center - I used to go as a student. They do some classes and also have a pool available.

I think one of the other big problems is that the gyms we DO have are not spread around the city enough. We live in the Potranco/1604 area and there aren't any nice gyms, with child care, in this area. Supposedly, Spectrum is supposed to build here, but I haven't seen it yet and have been told that for 2 1/2 years now when I go in to renew our membership. It takes us at least 20-30 minutes to drive to the gym (depending on traffic). That is too much time taken out of my busy schedule. It's sad to admit, but sometimes that is why I don't make it to the gym as often as I would like to. I know many people in this area that are just waiting for a gym to open. So, the first one who does is going to make a load of money off of this area!

what I like is that everyone believes you need to go to a gym in order to keep in shape. i run and do core workouts at home. you can buy most of the materials needed for core workouts for decently cheap.

there's also cycling, disc golf, outdoor sports, many things to do outside a gym.

to each their own, but having more gyms isn't going to fix this city's health problems.

To be honest, a gym IS what keeps me healthy. Everyone has their own preferences and things that keep them motivated. For me, it's classes with instructors helping me AND the fact that I can get a little mommy me time while my son has fun playing in the kids area at the gym. I do have a few workout things at home, but I don't own tread mills or eliptical machines and stuff like that either. Nor, do I want this stuff taking up room in my home. Which is why a gym is great! Again...hoping for a gym near my home.

the gym of my choice is PLanet fitness, longest membership I have had and the only real gym i could stay active at. Not fancy, not trashy, just the right environment for me, and has helped me lose so far, 45lbs since Jan 1st. At 10$ a month, you cant go wrong.

I go to a gym and am happy with mine but what gets me is the lack of walking/jogging trails. Others cities like Austin has lots of options but here there is only McAllister Park.

There a multiple numbers of parks with trails here in SA. Plus there's the riverwalk down by King William, buddy just told me Woodlawn Lake, Nani Falcone, high school tracks, etc. Plenty of sidewalk out there to run.

This exactly.

I live on the NE side near Windcrest. There are no gyms nearby except for Curves. They've been promising a new YMCA just blocks away for TWO years now and I've yet to see anyone working on the building even!

That's what get's me, sure in the long run, $30-$45 a month for a great gym with classes, elliptical, and all those extra things isn't a lot, but for a city that has such a low cost of living, it's a bit costly. I just wish there was a Planet Fitness closer (the closet is Bandera and Huebner) so I could spend the $10. But enough of my whining. Back to my cookies.
Sorry, but Curves doesn't qualify as a gym, IMO.

I used to go to the Concord, then switched to Spectrum before I left. Now that I'm moving back, I may try Planet Fitness. Honestly, I'd prefer to run outdoors rather than the tready, but other than school tracks, I'm not sure where I could run. And, no, not on sidewalks, the concrete is too hard on my old feet and knees.
