Probably practice ordinances at Coronado. I heard 'em too and that seems to be the common explanation when I've heard it before.

My sister and her husband live in Temecula and even there they can routinely hear the booming of the artillery guns and see the explosion flashes on Camp Pendleton. The Marine Corp does their artillery training out there and when the large shells hit you can hear the rumble 20 or 25 miles away.
