I read this article and I feel furious about our school system here in SD. Here is the link to the article. What do you think we should do with our school system?

How about some pension reform? Here is what happens when you let Unions run their own system.

High-Paid SoCal City Officials Asked To Resign - cbs5.com (http://cbs5.com/local/bell.high.salaries.2.1820213.html - broken link)

Now they are using the death of a child as their mantra to steal more money from tax payers in a recession. If they really "cared" they would reform out of control pensions instead of trying to be creative by cutting off services to people like this boy. The answer is not more taxes. The sales tax in SD is normal for any large City. This tax increase, if passed, is not "guaranteed" for anything except to keep on lining the pockets of Govt workers.

anyone knows when we are going to vote for the tax increase to help school district? I am going to vote no although I have 2 kids.

Interesting. when I was living in Hong Kong, class size was around <40 (a little more than what we have here), but class hour was from 7-3 or 4 (i.e. 8 hours a day vs. 5 hours a day here in SD), the students go to school for 5 days a week (never heard of any mid-week conference for teachers that will take a whole wednesday off just for that, ridiculus). Teachers graded homework at home. Teachers pay were less than half of what we have to pay the teachers here. And the science subject scores are a lot better than schools here. Teachers rarely complaint that they had too much workload. Everybody was happy. Why is there so much difference? Part of the reason is the union. They prevent new teachers coming to the system, they delay the process of teacher lay-off (to remove bad blood), they prohibit a bonus or merit system to develop to motivate good teachers, they have too much power to do things their ways by using our money. And we have to pay more and more and more money and they still think that is not enough. They are using our kids as the way to negotiate more pay and benefit. The presence of the union is a waste of our money and in the end, it is useless. I think it is time to have our school system make-over and get rid of the unproductive, inefficient, and money sucking teachers union totally.
