I have a plate from south america that I would like to display on the tail gate of my truck. Its just for decoration. Is it illegal to display two car plates in california?

The closest thing I saw was this:
V.C. Section 4851 - Display of Plates

Display of Plates

4851. Every license plate shall have displayed upon it the registration number assigned to the vehicle for which it is issued, together with the word "California" or the abbreviation "Cal." and the year number for which it is issued or a suitable device issued by the department for validation purposes, which device shall contain the year number for which issued.

So it seems that since your extra plate would say something other than what every palte is required to say, it would not be legal.

No it's not legal, just because you've seen them on other cars doesn't mean it's legal. People tint their front windows too, but that's illegal. You will get a fix it ticket. I got one for having a European license plate along with my CA plate.

Why you would want to have a SA plate on your car is unknown, but you are just asking for trouble.

It just depends on the cop. If you do get stopped for the plate have a screwdriver in your glovebox & remove the plate in front of the cop. Hopefully he dont give you a $25.00 fix it ticket but if he does then hes a jerk.

True. It's really the cops interpretation of the VC. If he wants to be a dick, then he will give you a ticket (like the cop who cited me).

PS: I think they keep track of fix its. On my first window tinting fix it, the court fee was $85. On my second violation, it was raised to over $300.

The court does keep track of all tickets including fix it tickets. They want your hard earned money cause they are greedy. Someone has to pay the highest paid judges (ca) in the nation salaries.
