I am from NYC and will be visting SF a few a days next week. I am looking for a hotel that is in a good location and has a young crowd (I am in my mid-20's). Perhaps somewhere that has some nightlife within the hotel and walking distance from the hotel.

Any recommendations? I don't really know what the fun neighborhoods are for someone like...

I have to share a room with a friend at a hotel called "Palace Hotel San Francisco" for the first few days for a convention. Should I stay there or is there something more inline with my interests? From my experience convention center hotels are out of the way and boring.

Depends on your budget (and what has vacancy on such short notice, though it is the off-season now). I'd look at places around Union Square, somewhere on or east of Mason. West of Mason is the Tenderloin which is pretty ghetto but has a lot of hotels.

So would you say that any reasonable quality hotel within the Union Square area fits the bill?

Well, read up about them on yelp or whatever to make sure there aren't any glaring issues (but take the reviews with a grain of salt because a lot of people complain about dumb crap). But if you want a young crowd definitely it's the area you want. Fisherman's Wharf and Lombard have a lot of hotels but will be more of a famlies and old people crowd. There's a lot of cheap but good hotels near the SF airport but that will mainly be business travelers and cheapskates. Other than that there aren't really any areas of the Bay Area near SF with a big concentration of hotels. Japantown has a couple nice ones though.

King George Hotel on Mason Street near Union Square. Lots of international travelers stay at that hotel and the others ones on that block.

Sure, go with the Palace Hotel which is upscale. It's downtown and within walking distance of Union Square and other places. There is a BART subway station (Montgomery St.) nearby. San Francisco California Hotel – Palace Hotel

The Palace is probably like $500 a night, there's probably not too many young people staying there, but it's in a good location. If you aren't footing the bill I'd stay there.

I got it for $150/night. Must be off-season. It's about the same as the others in the area anyway.

Thanks everyone. It looks like I am going with The Palace Hotel. I mapped it and it seems like it is in a good location.
