Hi I am moving to South Sanfrancisco with my partner. I am looking for suggestions on what areas I can live in with 30 minutes commute one way. I will make 74K/annum and want to know how is the rents for 1BR and how is the public transport? Have heard there is BART and CALtrain but any insights would be great..

Are you working in South San Francisco and want to know where you can live within 30 minutes of it, or you plan to move to South San Francisco? It's a small city, which is why I'm a little confused. There is a BART station there with parking. You can also consider Colma, San Bruno and parts of Daly City and Pacifica. If you look around Pacifica, make sure its along Skyline.

Will there be two incomes in the household, or just yours?

you can look in the Outer Mission and Ingleside, of SF, or Daly City, South SF, or Pacifica. You can find some nice 1-br. apts in the area for $1800-$2300, but those cheaper ones will go fast. You need to be aggressive and timely in calling on new listings, if you use Craigslist. There's a lot of competition for "affordable" housing. (A very relative term, in SF!) The more you can pay, the better your options.

Thanks for your suggestion. There will be just me who will be earning . But I am looking at something in the range of 1400$ which I think will be affordable. I don't need a 1000sqft apartment. 550 would do for me. I am presently staying in NJ for 1150$ and moving to SSF for a year. After that I might move back.

Have you looked at the listings? It's the 550 sq. ft apts. that are going for around $1900-$2000. Welcome to San Francisco.

You will need a shared apartment if your budget is 1400 month

You'll at most be able to find a studio or in-law unit at that budget. Daly City is your best bet, maybe Pacifica or the parts of San Mateo away from downtown.

You might want to take a look at the Craigslist postings. I had a coworker paying 1k/mo for an inlaw unit in San Bruno. Good luck!

10 years ago I rented a 750 sq ft apt in SSF for 1095/month-I don't think you will find that these days. SSF is very foggy but close to Pacifica/ Half Moon Bay so that is a good trade off.

Depends where in SSF, closer to the bay, it's usually not foggy. Pacifica and Half Moon Bay are really foggy. Basically... near ocean, more fog... near bay, less fog.
