Hi,

I am Westsideboy from the Maryland forum. We are having a discussion about what steps residents of big cities take to prevent thefts from their parked cars. The general consensus in Baltimore is that even if you are living in a good neighborhood, you should never leave anything of value in your car, and keep the glove box and center consol open so that perps can easily see there is nothing of value in your car, otherwise you are at risk for having your car broken into.

Is that the standard in nice neighborhoods in San Jose as well? Thanks in advance for the replies.

I think that is standard in the less upscale neighborhoods, and the up and coming neighborhoods in San Jose. I haven't really heard of issues with breakins in nice neighborhoods in San Jose. San Francisco though it is a whole different matter, maybe you have heard stories about SF, it is a completely different city.

Yeah, my wife and I leave nothing visible in our cars - mostly because I'm OCD, but also so a criminal isn't inclined to smash my window.

Otherwise, my condo complex has lots of lights in the parking areas, and some supposedly functional cameras.

We have learned from experience that the not-so-fancy cars (ours) are targeted more than the others for smash-and-grab crackheads in SF, given that they are presumably usually easier to get into than newer models. That, and leaving anything (dirty laundry, even...not kidding) in such a vehicle apparently is a magnet for such opportunists, even in broad daylight. But that's SF, not San Jose.
