Ehhh...as of current, if I want a nice dinner I would not need to go to those places. Right now I got Nemea in Downtown and San Jose residents have always had La Foret in Almaden. Granted, your average middle-class San Jose residents can only afford La Foret once or twice a year

But I surely would not mind another fine-dining restaurant in downtown that's even more upscale than Nemea (and more expensive). Something like a La Foret. That would be fantastic!

Heck, doesn't the Market has a second floor above the bigger hall? They should put a super high-end fine-dining restaurant up there, with a balcony to boot! Charge and arm and a leg, with superb quality to match.

We know that, but yuppies moving in have to wade through tons of propaganda poo-pooing SJ's culinary offerings, and act accordingly. But then again, some people ramble on about how they think SF doesn't, either...which is just insane.

SJ doesn't really help itself with its generally poor marketing of the city

IMHO, San Jose would be better off if it came clean. Admit that, in the past, a lot of detractors were right and that, yes, San Jose has a problem and, now that it can admit that it has a problem, it's going to work on that problem for several years and solve it.

Instead of over-promising and under-delivering, San Jose should try under-promising and over-delivering. Let low expectations work their magic.

Three things could really help: (1) wait for new A restaurants to prove themselves before declaring victory; (2) stop pretending like B and C restaurants are A restaurants; and, (3) make/encourage/help restaurants manage their Yelp! ratings and address those bad reviews that are dragging them down.

In the past, the detractors were right. Now they're just plain damn annoying. Get the fvck out there and enjoy what the past 2-3 years have to offer, and see what the future is bringing.

San Jose has already come clean for the past 10 years, and is working on the problems, especially when it comes to revitalizing downtown, expediting small businesses, building higher-density housing, rejuvenating public transit, encouraging biking/walking/jogging by making new trails and dieting the streets, and pushing for more jobs in the city, especially in the northern N1 sector where tech are already heavily concentrated and should be increased even more.

Problems have been identified, and are actively being worked on. And as residents of this city, we should patronize these new services/restaurants/venues as they open up. If we are not doing that, then what's the point of improvements?

San Jose's rebirth, especially downtown, was significantly set back by the obliteration of the Redevelopment Agency. They had a system and a comprehensive strategy to revitalize downtown...then got their funds yanked by the state. But progress still happens, including the near completion of the convention center expansion and shows at the refurbished Civic, so the city is still going forward with downtown improvements. Still need to bring back Music in the Park, though. Cesar Chavez Park, for free.

The Civic is looking quite nice these days:

I totally agree with you on the Redevelopment Agency being wiped out. And there was almost no criticism of the governor or legislature for doing that.

The issue with Music in the Park was that it was expensive because they had to pay the police overtime to patrol it and it was attracting a ghetto element who vandalized local businesses but didn't spend any money. As usual, a few thugs ruin things for everyone else.

Well, Music in the Park came back, albeit much smaller, this summer. Paid format. I was there...it was good! The fees kept the riff raff out, so I'm all for that in the future editions. Hopefully we have a big one next year.

Yeah honesy music in the park was great this year, Ozomatli killed it. I kinda liked the attention it brought to St.James too.

I liked free better. Unfortunately, the riff raff always ruins "free" for everyone else.
