In other news: The rich continue to pay nearly all of our taxes.......... The article could have been titled "Why the rich paying all the taxes will bail themselves out with their own money they already paid to the Government while half of the country pays 2% of the taxes in total"

1 - Nonsense. The Federal Personal Income Tax makes up less that 25% of total tax revenue collected - but it's the only one that those who like to toss out this nonsense seem to remember.

2 - Not even remotely related to the subject being discussed.

1.) See link in my post, factual.

2.) What subject was being discussed, the entire post was a link to a news story and it was about taxpayers bailing out rich. I talked about how the rich are the taxpayers anyway, so what's the difference?

People live on fault lines, people live tornado zones, in wildfire regions, and people live in flood zones, including inland rivers where flooding occurs the most. Mudslides, sinkholes, you simply can't be expected to pay quadruples insurance rates when your home, services and infrastructure has been in place for years. I know it's unsavory, but downloading huge life-long insurance costs to people who probably won't ever file a claim doesn't seem right either. There's lots of poor people in flood zones, I'm guessing a lot more than rich folks. *author owns no property in a flood zone.

The process for getting a property modified is called "Letter of Map Amendment". It's available to anyone. It's kind of complicated and it appears that most folks hire a professional to handle the details for them - such as surveyor, engineer, land planner, etc.

We did letter of map amendment for house we owned in TX/DFW area
FEMA redid the flood zones W/O doing any on the ground surveys or basically any review except just widening what was already there on previous flood zone maps

put our attached garage in a flood zone--totally not going to happen since our area had already been through what amounted to more than a 100 yr flood a couple of years prior...
there WAS a lot of flooding in some creek bed areas--a couple of people drowned--
but our backyard/house never had water come out of the banks of the creek along our back fence...since our lot boundary DOES include area to the middle of the creek bed a small portion outside the fence does flood...but it never gets beyond the fence into the yard...

we got survey company to recheck elevations and apply for letter of map amendment--which we got and were able to take the house/garage/and all of the fenced backyard except for back corner farthest from house out of the flood zone
Sold the house w/o really much problem several years later because the buyer didn't need flood insurance for mortgage...

SOME of what FEMA designates as likely to flood is just a guestimate...and frankly if you are on a creek with close location to major water source in FL gulf coast and a hurricane comes then you are lot more likely to get flooded than my house in TX...
so without specific and INFORMED assessment I don't think anyone can say how fair the new zones are...
some probably are spot-on for accuracy and some likely are overkill...
