Phillipi Shores used to be a 9. Now it is a 10
Gulfgate and Alta Vista used to be 7s and are now 8s.

There may be other changes. Those are just the ratings I am familiar with.

Can you tell me - or do you have any idea - why the GreatSchools ratings are SO low for most of the k-12 schools in the Sarasota area? We are moving to the area, and I find this troubling, to say the least. I know there are a couple with much better ratings, but I just can't wrap my head around why all of the others would receive such low ones...like a 1 or 2. I would so appreciate any info you could share.

I looked at great schools site again and saw two schools that had rating of 1 or 2. One is a virtual school. I have a hard time imagining a virtual school for elementary aged children. The other is a special needs school with a disgruntled parent rating.

As Bbronston has noted, great schools is based on parent rankings, whereas the state website ranks on hard criteria. Lower rating may reflect parents who are not internet posters. The difference between the 6s and 7s and the 9s and 10s may reflect the socioeconomic status of the surrounding neighborhoods more than the quality of the education. I think each school is a case by case basis. It would be a good idea to use all sources of data: great schools, the state website, and info about the socio economic status about the neighborhood. When you look at great schools, click on the link that allows you to read the actual reviews.

Most people say Sarasota schools are some of the best as well as Venice so that's interesting.
