Manatee County hospice volunteer celebrates patients' birthdays dressed in costumes

A Manatee County woman is bringing joy to people in hospice care by celebrating their birthdays.

Pam Freas volunteers with Chapters Health Lifepath Hospice by dressing in costumes and visiting patients for their birthdays. She also helps manage the supplies for milestone birthday celebrations, including packing birthday bags full of blankets and pillows.

Freas recently visited a young boy named Jackson who was in home hospice care. She dressed as a dinosaur since Jackson loves dinosaurs.

Although Jackson has a difficult time communicating, Freas spent time talking with him to brighten his day.

“You can’t tell, but he’s very enthused right now,” said mom Jazmeen Cruz.

“Today is my birthday, too,” Freas said. “So that means we are birthday twins. What do you think about that?”

After the visit, Freas was ecstatic.

“This is probably going to go down as one of the best birthday memories for me,” she said. “Sharing a birthday with him and hoping we made his birthday very, very special.”

Freas got started with her volunteer work when her father spent his last days at hospice.

“It really is a special calling,” said Freas. “I started when my father passed away. As a matter of fact, he passed right here at the Hospice House in Sun City and I just knew I had to start volunteering.”

Heat Exhaustion advisory for pets

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=np3x59WILbM

Veterinarians in Tampa are issuing a warning.

As temperatures have risen, several dogs have suffered heat exhaustion in the last week, and some have even died.

With a scorching summer ahead, Dr. Melissa Webster with Tampa Veterinary Hospital is reminding pet owners to be aware of the dangers of heat.

“We’ve literally had four heat stroke dogs in the last two weeks, two have died.,” Dr. Webster said. “One arrived dead-on presentation, one we ended up having to put to sleep after just about an hour into trying to resuscitate him because he was having seizures.”

She is sounding the alarm after witnessing the concerning surge in doggie heat exhaustion.

“They look to us like they’re smiling. Your dog is trying to blow off the heat and they’re just overheating right now,” Webster said.

The Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources announced its new Bridge-to-Bridge Bay Slam, a catch-and-release fishing tournament for non-motorized vessels.

The tournament will take place on Saturday, May 18, on Sarasota Bay.

The event kicks off with a pre-tournament meeting on Friday, May 17, 6 p.m. - 7 p.m. at the Phillippi Estate Park pavilion, 5500 S. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota.

Anglers should bring their own gear and kayak to have the opportunity to fish for Red Drum, Spotted Seatrout and Snook. Each angler must catch and release one of each species, and the largest overall length of all three species combined will be the winner.

Fishing begins at 7 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, covering the expansive Sarasota Bay from the Coon Key Bridge and Ringling Causeway to Blackburn Pointe Bridge.

Photo submissions will be scored at 2 p.m. with results announced at 4 p.m.

This tournament offers a unique opportunity for anglers to showcase their skills and compete in a friendly environment. The event is supported by the generous donations of Economy Tackle, Dolphin Paddle Sports, CBs Outfitters, All About Fishing, Kayaking SRQ and Paradise Adventures.

Registration is now open with a fee of $45 per angler. Anglers must complete registration by 5 p.m. on May 17 to secure their spot. Onsite registration will not be available because of a limited entry of up to 100 anglers.

The tournament features three divisions to accommodate anglers of all ages: Small Fry (ages 9 and younger), Junior (ages 10-17) and Open (ages 18 and older).

Scoring will be based on a catch, measure and photo and release method, promoting marine conservation and sustainable fishing practices. Register here:

More than 300 high school students from Manatee and Sarasota counties attended Manatee Technical College’s “Construction Rodeo" Thursday.

The event was created to introduce students to career opportunities in construction and other trades.

There were several hands-on demonstrations, including one where students brazed copper air conditioning lines.

“We do this in partnership with the schools, to help them get hands on activity, show the kids what’s out there, generate that interest, and they can come out of high school with a good-paying job,” said Gulf Coast Builders Exchange executive director Mary Dougherty.

GCBX, a not-for-profit construction industry trade organization, sponsored the Construction Rodeo. The event brought together more than 30 local businesses to meet with students at Manatee Technical College to give them opportunities to experience careers that some may have never even considered.

“My favorite was the diesel — learning how to turn on the lights and turn on the turn signals," said Parrish Community High School senior Emily Evans. "But other than that, I liked the welding as well over there."

While welding was Emily’s favorite, she also tried painting. Welding won over a lot of the students, including MTC student Madison Vremer, who joined her alma mater, Palmetto High School, to watching a welding demonstration.

“I’ve kind of always wanted to do things with my hands, for my entire life, and this I can progress and grow and all that kind of stuff,” she said.

Currently, experts say the construction industry exceeds the current workforce, which is why organizers said it’s so important to hold events like the Construction Rodeo.

“Not every kid is going to college, so we need to get this message to them where they live, that this is available in their community, there’s good careers, and they can do it,” said Dougherty.

Nelly Korda's historic LPGA winning streak comes to an end at Cognizant Founders Cup

For full article:

https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/gol...d=BingNewsSerp

Bradenton native Nelly Korda’s historic streak came to an end in New Jersey.

The World No. 1 still managed to smile walking off the 18th as her caddie, Jason McDede, gave her a side hug. Korda didn’t become the first player to win six consecutive starts on the LPGA, but she did become the third to win five – and that’s still pretty spectacular.

“Gosh, hasn’t even sunk in,” said Korda of her remarkable start to 2024. “Probably maybe now or maybe in like 10, 15 years it’ll sink in. Hopefully someone beats it one day.”

Korda carded a pair of 73s over the weekend to finish in a share of seventh at the Cognizant Founders Cup at Upper Montclair Country Club in Clifton, New Jersey. She went into Saturday’s third round in third place, four shots back, but never made much of a rally.

“I’m human,” said Korda after Saturday’s round, “so I’m going to have bad days.

Korda began the week with a splash at the Met Gala, becoming the first golfer since Tiger Woods to receive an invitation to the A-list affair. She’d taken two weeks off after winning the Chevron Championship, her second career major, to rest up for Founders.

While Korda didn’t close it out this weekend, another American star, Rose Zhang, chased down Madelene Sagstrom after trailing three strokes with three to play. Zhang birdied four of her last five holes to card a 66 and win by two shots.

Florida leads country in mass shootings after gunfire injures several. What to know

For full article:

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime...ow/ar-BB1mfHYt

Tallahassee's early Sunday morning shooting of multiple people at a shopping center means Florida remains the state with the most mass shootings across the country, according to data from the Gun Violence Archive.

The shooting occurred early Sunday morning as the darkened city was still coping with widespread destruction and power outages from multiple tornado strikes Friday. Tallahassee police say they responded to find two men dead at the scene and two other adult victims wounded.

That puts Florida's total of mass shootings this year so far at 14, the same number the Sunshine State saw by this time last year. Florida jumped ahead of the rest last month when there were three mass shootings in three days.

A shooting in San Antonio Wednesday night that left five people dead, including three children under the age of 10, and a shooting in Long Beach that injured seven people, three of them critically, brought Texas and California up to second behind Florida with 12 each.

As of May 12, there have been 156 mass shootings nationwide, compared to 216 by the same time in 2023, according to GVA data.

Last year showed an overall 8-10% decrease in deaths and injuries from gun violence compared to 2022, the GVA said, with some cities seeing 20+% decreases. The FBI reported violent crime, robberies and burglary were all down in 2023.
