That's soooo true. I work in Garden City and live in Bluffton, and when I tell people this they look at me like I have two heads and they are speechless. I have to remind some people that it is ok to live in one state and work in another, and they did build a bridge to make that happen. And you know what...that bridge is free! In some states it costs up to $10 to cross a bridge so I should be lucky!

Oh and there is nothing wrong with I-16....its just boring!

US 17 and I-95 in South Carolina are the pits. Both are in serious need of resurfacing AND widening!

Unfortunately the way it works is, the Feds provide funding to build interstate and US highways but it's up to the states to maintain them. Obviously that's not a high priority in SC. Like I said before, we can be grateful for the generally good job GDOT does (though it comes at a huge cost of course). Georgia may lack a lot of things but bad roads isn't one of them.

The problem in our area is....we aren't Atlanta or Columbia and that is where all the transportation dollars go.

Many of the roads in Savannah and in South Carolina are s******. I recently went to Hardeeville taking I-95 there and US Hwy 17 back and it was horrible. I thought I was going to need a new set of tires afterwards. A week before that, my mother and I were traveling in her car back to Savannah and at the end of the Talmadge Bridge on Hutchinson Island. Rocks on the road started flying because of the wind and traffic, one dented my mother's windshield. The roads in Savannah's downtown, east side, midtown, parts of the west side, and parts of the south side are atrocious.

It was about dang time that Bay Street between MLK and 516 was paved. They need to pave the rest of it.

Many of the problems stem from uncontrolled big truck traffic. If the city/county/states would establish more restrictive truck routes through the area and enforce them, then the extra taxes these vehicles pay could probably take care of the damage they cause. And it would improve driving for the rest of us.

In SC the problems are made worse by truckers who try to bypass the weigh station on I-95 by cutting through the wildlife refuge and driving up 17 to Hardeeville. If there was a weigh station up there you better believe the situation would improve.

Do you mean coming south or going north? I've never seen the SC weigh stations open (they're basically a pull-off on the side of the road with a shed!). For that matter, Ga weigh stations only seem open about half the time.

Both directions. There's one in GA for southbound traffic and one in SC just south of Hardeeville for northbound. Every time I've driven by they seemed busy.

Maybe things have changed recently?

There USED to be a weigh station on US-17. Ever notice when 17 turns into 4 lanes right when it merges with 17-A there is a huge concrete parking lot in the middle, that used to be the weigh station.
