The transformation of Broughton Street continue with a six story building being proposed at 215 W Broughton Street. The building will feature a jewelry store on the first floor, offices on floors two thru four and private residences on five and six.

I would like to see renderings of the entire building, but overall, so far, I like it!

6 stories is still not very tall and Broughton Street needs a bit of elevation. Especially since we lost an 11 story structure so many years ago at Broughton and Bull.

I'm almost positive there will be local backlash on this though, sadly. The owners are from Connecticut and threw in the word Manhattan.... so those two things alone will scare people into nonsensical negativity.

I saw the article posted on the SMN Facebook page this morning. As expected, most of the comments are negative. Big surprise there.

The more I read, the more I start to doubt the intelligence of the general population down there. Ugh.. Good thing I know not to lump every one into one pile of idiocy.... as tempting as it may be.

To the subject, the building itself is described as modern. Okay. I can understand why people would question this. To the defense of the building/designer, personally, it appears very elegant and worthy of a much desired spot in the Historic District. Factually, at some point, what today is modern will one day be history. That's how it works.

Savannah has MANY good examples of 19th and early to mid 20th century architecture. Wouldn't it be in the best interests of the city to add in some examples of early 21st century architecture for future visitors and those that appreciate that sort of thing?

WanderingImport, I wouldn't pay too much attention to the comments section of any newspaper. Those comment boards seem to attract some more ignorant segments of the population.

I agree completely.

I do start to wonder where the intelligent people are though. Perhaps they feel it isn't worth the hassle to comment..

"Echoes of Manhattan"?

What a provincial American no-nothing. (The SMN, not the architect)

For one thing, the building is only modern if one thinks the Art Nouveau era of the early 20th century is modern. Look at that curved window on the sixth floor. And six story streetscapes are typical of Paris, not New York City.

But I do like the building, as far as infill goes. Christian Sottile is one of Savannah's greatest assets.

With all of the changes that are occurring along Broughton Street and the downtown historic district, what do you guys think the area will look like in 10 years?

I think, for the most part it will look the same with glitzier details.
