At yesterday's city council meeting, the team behind this new mixed-use project unveiled their vision for the 27-acre site on Hutchinson Island. The project will be built in 3 phases and will contain a total of 700 residential units, a 160-room hotel, 45,000 sf of retail space, greenspace, marina, fitness center and a 70,000 sf medical/technology building. The first phase is expected to start construction by Summer 2020. It will feature a marina, 199 apartments, 154 rental flats and townhomes, 20,000 sf of retail space, and 8,500 sf restaurants and greenspace. Below are renderings and a link to the presentation. This project will certainly help transform Hutchinson Island and will act as a second "Downtown" for Savannah.

We'll see if it happens. I don't know if there's that much demand for housing on HI without the infrastructure (grocery, pharmacy etc) to support it. Also, I wish the buildings were closer to the river and made a bigger statement.

While I can understand the skepticism regarding whether or not this project will happen, according to an article from April, the developers have secured funding for the 1st phase.

I think I would live there. It would be no further to drive off island to shop than it is most places. I like the idea of being a ferry ride to the historic district, while being separated from it by the river.

I think if this development does get underway, it will certainly force the city to fastrack the construction of the planned Hutchinson Island public safety complex. Between this and the planned expansion of the convention center and new hotel, a new fire/police complex will be needed on the island. Also, I could see scaled-down versions of Publix or some specialty grocer opening in this development. Either way, development on the island is not a matter of if, but when.

Looks great. I suppose they will have to drive deep pilings in for the foundations. I really like that they are preserving some area for green space, looks great.
