This is going to sound crazy because I don't even know how to explain what it is I'm asking, I didn't understand the technology and I don't remember where i saw it..but..

I saw a tv program..The host of the show went into a lab. They had this thing..They a took a 3D "picture" of an adjustable wrench by scanning it with a laser. They then fed the info/picture into a computer..The computer was hooked up to this thing..This thing was like a box full of..let's say a powder or sand...Within minutes they had a working wrench that had been made out of powder or sand.

One of the lab techs talked about being on the space station, if you were to lose your wrench or whatever you'd be able to make one no problem.

Anyone know what the hell I'm talking about? I've tried explaining it to people, but I sound like a fool.

It's called a 3D printer and probably the future of manufacturing. The benefits are numerous, one machine to produce anything. You could be a manufacturer of toys one day and be making guns the next. No retooling etc.

We have one in my school district. It was god awful expensive but our engineering kids use it alot. One of them made me little salt and pepper shakers to take camping.

True but that isn't what they use the printer for generally speaking. Though these salt and pepper shakers were a design project to show that one group could design independently the bottom and the other group the tops.
