Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk is proposing a magnetic tube transport that would greatly reduce travel times. If testing shows this system to be feasible, it is something that the US government would be forced to support. Because you can be certain that if it works, Europe and China will plunge into development.
If this proposal is feasible, it is not merely a more convenient mode of travel, it would represent a significant change in our society and culture. Work, leisure, employment, commerce, communication... would be enhanced. It would be a development that future historians look back on as a socially and economically transformative technology, similar to the automobile and rail transit.
Imagine waking up in your western California beachfront home, hopping on the transport and being at work in Manhattan, NY 45 minutes later ! Or from your home in NY to your work in London/Paris
People would have geographic choices of living and working wherever they wished with no limits. We would be living in a different world.

Also, it isnt only Elon Musk. A company named ET3 is conducting research into a very similar transport system. This could very well be a technology that sees rapid advancement and innovation in the very near future as more determined research firms and investors are willing to fund serious, goal driven R&D.
What I got from the interview on NBC was that he made a bunch of drawings overnight, showed them to the interviewer, then told him that he was leaving the implementation up to others.
