I actually agree that the wording in this particular article does sound rather foolish. Unfortunately the media has a way of trying to spice of an article with attention getting headlines. A scientific piece might not get much attention but when you try to jazz it up a little bit you'll probably get a few more readers and I think that's all that's going on here. The article itself was actually pretty informative and did shed some light on how these animals may have interacted socially so I wouldn't just write it off as nonsense.
