What would be the best way to get from the Airport into downtown. How much is a cab ride?

Also, if anyone knows anything of the Green Tortoise, what is it like? It's a hostel.

Taxi is approximately $30 on the meter, plus gas surcharge, plus tip (usually ~15% around here) -- one way.
#174 Metro bus is about $2.00. I do not recommend this as it takes a long time and many people who ride this particular route are not happy or stable.
There are also Airporter busses, and Shuttle Express reserved van-pools (Google for it), and free airport shuttles provided to staying customers by certain hotels.

Here is some info on the Green Tortoise:

The cab ride from the airport to downtown Seattle was 28 dollars last time I checked. Better bet might be Metro bus # 194 ,an express from the airport to downtown for far less money, like 1.75?, and is quite fast, and fine if you don't have a lot of luggage...
I've heard good things about the Green Tortoise Hostel, and also the AYH Ranch Hostel on Vashon Island, a 20 minute ferry ride from downtown.

I've taken the bus to/from SEATAC before, with luggage, and it was fine. No problems.

When we arrived here from overseas though we used the Shuttle Express because we had a ton of luggage and 2 cats. $20 apiece from the airport to the U District. Very well priced.

So remember there are two Metro buses from Sea-Tac to downtown, the 174 which is slow and creepy, but good if you want to view some of the Seattle area's scuzziest neighborhoods, and the 194 which is fast and fine.
