We take home invasion very seriously. Our dogs are our first line of defense. You should also make sure your cell phone is by your bedside. Phone lines can be cut. Keep your car keys by your bedside as well. Those panic buttons wiil cause your car horn to wake the neighbors. We have home invasion drills just like we have fire drills. My hubby knows that if I ever wake him in the middle of the night and tell him I think someone is in the house, don't question me. Take immediate action. Grab the gun, which should also be nearby. Yes we take home invasion very seriously since the well known Shelton,CT case.
you are asleep? If you are in bed and hear someone breaking into your house, what is your go to gun for home protection...again while you are in bed asleep?
A PTR 91SC with a 20 round magazine is over my bed, and my wife has a AR15 near her side of the bed. we both sleep with Glock 21's attached to the headboard as well.
I have put a very large, flashlight by my bed. Clunking someone on the head with that, would definitely buy me some time, and blinding them with the light would also buy me a few more seconds to get away.
Yeah, Jasper, a flashlight is handy to have, but it will not keep you from becoming a victim. You've probably heard the saying "don't bring a knife to a gun fight", same goes with a flashlight. If you really are sincere about protecting yourself and your family you will invest in a firearm of some kind so you can defend your home if you need to. A small dog for early warning in the middle of the night is a good idea also, it is the cheapest way to go, not necessarily the best.
Right now it's a Sig P239 in .40 S&W with a separate LED flashlight, this is soon to be replaced with a Beretta PX4 Storm in .40 S&W which will have 7 more rounds in the mag and a Streamlight TLR-3 on the accessory rail.
I have 3 dogs that bark their heads off at the slightest noise. The darn things wake us up a couple of times every night because they saw or heard something that set them off. They all have pretty big barks, and are good sized to boot. As far as warning systems go, dogs can't be beat. And I figure if anyone was stupid enough to try to break into our house after hearing the hellhounds baying like slavering beasts and clawing at the door or window the criminal is attempting to enter, they must be insane or hyped up on lots of very illegal substances.

I have a german shepherd that has free roam over the house during the night (the doors to all rooms remain open). He barks if he sees or hears anything other than the usual sounds.
Within 3 ft of the bed, I have a Glock 22 (.40 cal) with a light attached, a vest, and a strong flashlight. I also have a Springfield XD45 and Glock 27 in a digital safe.
