There is another possibility - Kim Jong-un is aiming for a Duchy of Grand Fenwick caper.
(From "The Mouse That Roared")
Due to a limited economy, the country is on the verge of bankruptcy. The prime minister decides that their only course of action is to declare war on the United States. Expecting a quick and total defeat (since their standing army is tiny and equipped with bows and arrows), the country confidently expects to rebuild itself through the largesse that the United States bestows on all its vanquished enemies (as it did for Germany through the Marshall Plan at the end of World War II).
. . .
In short, Kim is aiming for a quick win for the U.S.A. and a bountiful foreign aid package.

Or he's deluded from reading his own propaganda and thinks that famine and infrastructure decay are acceptable side effects so he can achieve his goal of conquering SoKor and driving out the foreign devils.

Which comes back to the massive military spending, supported in part, by the generous foreign aid that was to alleviate the famine, etc.

But now, the donors are spooked.
With the money spigot turned off, and the declining population eroding his power base, he's not going to make sound decisions.

Which begs the question : will he seek to destroy all around him as he tumbles into the abyss?

Ignorance and stupidity knows NO bounds whatsoever... Canada??? What the hell? Only 36% of Americans can identify North Korea on a map. Here are people saying the USA should take military action against NK, yet they have NO clue where it is, much less any clue about the very serious issues at hand:

IMHO, the most disturbing thing about the video seen here is the laughter and giggling. Truly, it's like they find being ignorant and uneducated something to laugh about, and even more so because they're on TV getting their 15 minutes.

To all the Dumb, Dumber and Dumbest people in this video and many others like them, look it up! I'm SURE there's an app for that. Just unbelievable. Wow.

Kim Jong Un may be ramping up his military’s underwater force, with plans of modifying the “missing” vessels to be able to launch nuclear missiles from underwater.

In 2016, both South Korea and Japan were alarmed after around 50 North Korean submarines suddenly disappeared off their radar. The undetectable subs, which account for 70% of Pyongyang’s underwater vessels, reportedly vanished without a trace after a stand-off with the South Korean military.

“We didn’t know where they were at the time,” researcher Bruce Klingner told CNBC. “One would hope that we would keep very close tabs on those that could launch the submarine-launched ballistic missiles [SLBMs].”

“All of that is very worrisome because that may very well have a nuclear weapon someday,” observed the expert on Korean and Japanese affairs.

INCORRECT. There is NO article on the internet entitled "North Korea Nuclear Sub Spotted Off California Coast" so you LITERALLY made that up.

And you didn't even post a link to back up your claim.

DON'T YOU THINK THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN ON THE NEWS????

The sub that was spotted "off the California Coast" was Russian, LAWFUL, and not in our waters. IN FEB. 2017

You're mixing up different stories and quotes and countries and years by just posting excerpts.

STOP WATCHING SITES LIKE THIS YOUTUBER AND INFOWARS and maybe you won't believe "nuclear war is likely to happen".

Lastly, these political posts belong in POLITICS OR CURRENT EVENTS NOT IN THIS SUBFORUM. IMO.

The U.S. military had been observing the submarine operate off North Korea's east coast when the vessel stopped, and U.S. spy satellites, aircraft and ships have been secretly watching for days as the North Korean navy searched for the missing sub.

The U.S. is unsure if the missing vessel is adrift under the sea or whether it has sunk, the officials said, but believes it suffered some type of failure during an exercise.

Tensions have heightened on the Korean peninsula following a fourth North Korean nuclear test and joint U.S.-South Korean military drills.

On Thursday, the South Korean military said North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles. They were fired from North Hwanghae province, south of Pyongyang, toward the sea east of the Korean Peninsula, the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said. The South tracked the projectiles and is monitoring the situation, it said.

Out of curiosity I searched for maps that would reveal nuclear targets in the United States, and I’ve posted them here for your interest.
The nuclear targets map shown below is one that I put together based on a number of factors while looking at other maps and data including military installations, nuclear weapons storage and silo locations, bases, cities, etc.. No doubt I’ve missed a number of them, as well as other probable strategic locations, but it’s simply food-for-thought.
The large target ‘blob’ areas shown within the apparent sparsely populated regions of Montana, N.Dakota, WY/NE/CO represent known ICBM silos and nuke storage. Also, it may seem like there are more ‘red dots’ on the map than any probable nuclear attack, but believe it or not, there could potentially be more – given the many thousands of nuclear weapons in Russia (for example).

Don't deflect the question. You posted two lies as fact. The missing sub is from 2016 and is believed to have sunk, and no NK sub was spotted off the coast of Cali.

Anyone that thinks you can survive a nuclear attack and/or the aftermath - is a fool. Even if you're not killed in the initial blast, the radioactive fallout will eventually get you. Also, electrical systems will go down, all of the food would irradiated, etc. Most wouldn't survive this, nor would you want to.

1983's made-for-TV movie "The Day After" seemed like a somewhat-realistic depiction of what to expect:

Even more realistic was the BBC UK film "Threads":

Also check out one of my favorite movies, Miracle Mile (1988) - starring Anthony Edwards & Mare Winningham:
