Two years ago, my husband bought a $1200 Hickey Freeman suit at Nordstrom, on sale for $800. It has been the worst suit he has ever purchased. The trouser pocket frayed so badly he had to cut it out. The waistband is shot and coming unbound.

Suits are supposed to last longer than this, yes? Is it reasonable for me to try to return it? There's a part of me that just wants to let them know our bad experience with this very expensive brand. I don't have the original tags, but American Express is sending me the statement the charge is on.

Thoughts? Besides expensive isn't always better?

Return 2 y.o. used and abused ( already frayed ) suit? No! You might want to find out who made it ( probably in India) and question the quality there, but I don't think you will resolve it.

The 123-year-old clothing manufacturer formerly known as Hartmarx Corp., which makes Hickey Freeman and other clothing. It filed for bankruptcy protection in 2009, just days after celebrating the fact that Barack Obama donned both a Hart Schaffner Marx suit and tux on his inauguration day.

I really don't think it reasonable to return a suit after 2 years. But you can always try. The worst that will happen is the CSR will be polite to you and when you leave, turn around and laugh until she wets herself.

If you can walk in the store and make the request without blushing, they will probably honor it. In your place, I would've taken it back when the pocket started fraying, or it started wearing unreasonably.

And, no, expensive does not mean better quality. You have to know what quality is and look for it. Expensive is just expensive.

As it was purchased at Nordstrom and you have proof of purchase, you might as well try. The worst they can do is say no. Good luck!

I would be very embarrassed returning anything after using it for 2 years.

You can try, the best case scenario is that they may offer you a discount on purchasing another suit. After 2 years, I would be embarassed to even think of returning an item. Businesses would not stay in business very long if they accepted returns from that long of time, especially an item showing wear and tear.

Nordstroms doesn't have a return policy. Just take it into the store and they will make it right. Google to topic, you wont find anyone who wasn't taken care of in a positive manner.

Thank you all for your responses. And I agree, returning most things after two years is a low-class move. But it's pretty outrageous this suit didn't last more than two years without falling apart. I'm certainly not going to go in there and pitch a fit. And, truly, some form of credit would be nice, but I'd just like to call to their attention this was a crappy suit. I'll let you know what happens.
