It's only a matter time before it ceases to exist.
The only way it can survive is it needs to change it's name and rebrand itself and carry upscale niche clothing that appeals to mostly teens and young adults. It needs to make things electronically friendly where people can bring coupons on their iPhones and have a website that caters to this population. Think of it like a younger more upscale version of Nordstrom.
JC Penny is an old company and doesn't appeal to let alone recognized by those under 40. It can't possibly survive at it's current status. There are too many stores that sell similar items. Even Target has better clothes than JC Penny now.

The problem in trying to appeal to younger people is that they are alienating their loyal customer base.
Once your customers go elsewhere, it's a real pain to try to get them to come back. I was at my local J.C. Penney a couple of weeks ago, and it was a beautiful shiny ghost town. So sad. I looked for some clothes in the petite section, and couldn't find anything I wanted to buy; that was so frustrating.
I don't have/didn't get a coupon but based on what I saw last time I was in the store - I'd also probably only get something like dish towels or socks.
I don't understand why companies like JCP, pricing aside, do not stock clothes that people want to buy??!! Someone posted above about looking and not being able to find clothes. The same with me and at many other stores. Don't the stores have buyers anymore? I don't get it. I have never seen so many ugly, dowdy clothes and terribly priced; JCP, Belk, and on and on!!!
I was in JCP the other day, just looking around. They've discontinued their St. John's Bay brand, which I really liked. They're putting in something called "Joe Fresh clothing," which I've never heard of. They're going to start carrying Martha Stewart items, and putting in Caribou Coffee Shops. I was told all of this by an employee walking by. His name tag had his first name on it, and his title was "Expert."
