I have a very specific need for a sound system that's a bit unusual.

My tenant below me is a coffee shop, which needs to play music during business hours. We have poor sound insulation between us, particularly for the bass sounds which come right through the floor. The simple iPod speakers the coffee shop is using have no independent knobs for bass and treble adjustment in order to turn down the bass.

Can one get a system with this adjustment, to significantly turn down/eliminate the bass?

Is it possible to set up a system so that I can also control the settings with a remote from the 2nd floor?

Thanks for any advice.

My guess is that a lot of the sound energy is because the structure is resonating. Before going further, you might try having the speakers mounted high and pointing down, and the mounts having rubber or foam (think bungee cords) to dampen the vibration from the actual speakers.

Well currently there aren't any separate speakers, just a small system that an iPod sits in, resting on the front counter.

Realistically (sorry for the Radio Shack pun) you aren't going to get much joy if a simple system on a counter is making objectionable noise on the floor above. Your expectations may be greater than the reasonable possibilities.

In the stereo systems of my youth there were knobs to adjust the bass and treble. These seem to have disappeared in new stereos.

The issue for me as I said before, is bass. If it was possible to lower it, like in the old systems, then the noise would be much less.

you could get a component system with tone controls which would allow you to demphasize the bass.

But as the poster above pointed out, if a small system sitting on the counter at normal listening volumes is enough to create objectionable bass resonance in the upstairs unit ...

you've got a bigger audio problem than will be cured by changing the components.

Best to investigate sonex panels or similar sound deadening/insulating panels in the ceiling of the area and to add insulation in your apartment. A heavy carpet underlayment and deep pile carpet may be of some help.

Yes, possibly.

The noise is not bad, and I can ask them to turn it down further. Some types of music are more bass-heavy than others. I've written it into the lease that the music must be low between certain hours. If all I am hearing are mild bass notes, then I believe that a system in which that is adjustable will help.

Is there a way that I could turn down the bass myself from the 2nd floor using a remote?

Since you seem to be the landlord of this property, then you must know you can't modify equipment you don't own nor can you have a remote to a tenants sound system. Thus as the LL you know its too expensive to lay sound baffling on your floor and most likely illegal to pad their ceiling due to fire code. I'm assuming you've already contacted the tenant and he probably gave you some advice. I'll also assume you contacted zoning and they told you the shop owner was not in violation of code. So the least expensive direction is for you to gift them a sound system with the correct sound controls since most likely there are a few years left on the lease.
