Never thought that I'd write about Dillard's as "awesome", but it is!

I went to a Dillard's "Clearance Store" at an otherwise terrible mall, and it was great: clean and well-organized, and if I didn't know that the store was 20 years old, I'd have thought that it had been newly opened as an outlet.

Plus there were tons of really nice clothes at really good prices: Ralph Lauren dress pants for work for under $20.

I hadn't realized that Dillard's is kind of upscale; it had really nice clothes, almost like Lord & Taylor.

Your thoughts about Dillard's? Do you consider it upscale?

I've always liked Dillard's, but a lot of their products cost more than I'm willing to pay. They aren't "top level" expensive, but certainly higher-end than places like Kohl's or JC Penney. The clothes themselves (when not looking at the label/designer but only at the quality of the item) are somewhat higher-grade than their lower-price competition, even in their store-label products. I haven't had a "poor quality" experience with the clothes I've bought there over the years (at least that I can recall). I find myself comparing them to Belk's a lot in terms of their "tier" of image, pricing and labels.

In my 20s and 30s I was much more "label-conscious," to use the polite term, so I'd go to Dillard's and ransack their clearance racks in hopes of finding a good deal on the latest, greatest designer's leftovers. I outgrew that, but I still feel like I can't justify buying anything full retail at Dillard's. It's either on sale or on clearance, or I'm probably not buying it there. Same with Belk's and Macy's. The current trend of opening a separate store to sell the clearance items is likely to reduce foot-traffic in the "main" stores, but it'll keep the penny-pinching riff-raff like me out of their way.

Macy's operates its version of TJMaxx, Marshalls, etc. in a few of its stores. It's named ' Backstage at Macys.' I have shopped one of these locations close to me (Chicago area) a few times. The Backstage merchandise seems to be a mixed bag. A few high end labels, but most of it is in the moderate price range. Actually, a fair number of Backstage items are labels which Macy's doesn't carry in the traditional areas of its stores. I will stop at these Macy's locations if I'm near one and check out Backstage, but wouldn't make a special trip to shop there. The verdict is still out on this latest venture of Macy's.

I used to shop there for the sales many years ago. Great deals!
