A friend emailed the name of a restaurant he wanted to try after the pandemic slows enough. I went looking online and although it was not a restaurant I am interested in due to the type of food, I noticed there were no prices for anything from apps to drinks. Now, I have not been to a restaurant in 2 years due to Covid but I have ordered online for delivery and have never seen this. From looking around online it seems this is not unusual in places like Japan and Europe. This seems to be common in pricier places. I do admit I don't frequent expensive restaurants.
I am curious if anyone experienced this and what you think about it? Thanks.
Online menus often do not have prices listed. I see this all the time and typically have to go through the online ordering menu to see the actual prices. It's not just expensive restaurants, but ones of all price points.
I think it's just so they don't have to change the website if ever there is a change in menu prices.

This. It also allows for multiple locations where the prices may be different. (i.e. an Olive Garden in Poughkeepsie will likely have lower prices than an Olive Garden in New York City)
I see this a lot when we're planning a trip to Las Vegas. Most of the restaurants at the larger casinos don't have prices online.
For local places, I usually can find the prices online. For chains, once I drill down to my location I see prices.
The sad part is that you cannot read the menus at some of the restaurants unless you use a QR code (e.g., Caesar's Palace). When you scan the code, the menu comes in a size that you cannot really view on your smartphone.
Anymore, prices online are irrelevant as often, there is no correlation to the actual prices you see in the restaurant. When you complain, you will see "Prices are subject to change."
I had to do quit a bit of traveling for work right around the time Covid19 appeared, I saw this quite a bit as I researched various local eateries and chain restaurants ahead of time. I don't think it's all that uncommon. The way I got around it was to use websites like Menupix, Zomato, and even Trip Advisor to look at pictures of actual menus. It's not foolproof and often not up to the minute, but typically it DOES give you a ballpark figure to work with and you can generally tell right away if a given restaurant is going to be out of your comfort range.

Yes, and I don't like it. I don't like surprise prices. And I don't like these silly, hip joints that think it's cute to have their menus on a dimly lit chalkboard instead of paper menus.
A few years ago, based on a recommendation, I made reservations for omakase at The California Grille atop the Contemporary in Disney World. Price was not mentioned nor were any clues to what would be served. We showed up at the check-in desk in the Contemporary downstairs and were escorted to a secret unmarked elevator to the restaurant. It was not until the meal was finished that we knew what it cost.

Usually Google or Yelp will give some idea, a hot dog stand will have "$", a high end place will have "$$$" and casual establishments (most places) will have "$$" in the synopsis of the place.
But I can certainly see why they wouldn't have all of their prices online. Too much hassle to keep up.
