I appreciate this practice. Hey, I'm willing to spend $$$ on a wonderful meal, but it IS nice to know what you're getting into
Add in to the fact that there are quite a few restaurants who do NOT accept credit/debit cards. Of course, you can always use their ATM machines at $10+ a whack.
There used to be upscale restaurants that handed out a menu without prices to the woman, and one with prices to the man who escorted her.
This makes me smile. There are still places that do this. I remember the first time I was staring at a wine list, and annoyingly said "There's no prices!" Ex said "There is on mine" begrudgingly. He liked those Michelin restaurants.
I didn't remember that being the case so I pulled up the online menu. As RamenAddict said, omakase is not listed on the menu. It's not an every night thing to my understanding. The bulk of the menu I just looked at is liquor and wine and quite impressive.
IE: I'd order 2-3 sides to preserve the side I "want" for me. The other two are for everyone to share.

If I were paying for it, I'd have a hard time shelling out that money for that salad.
I'd be like you gave me the restaurants pet RAT's salad, now please bring me my salad.

The clip was hilarious. I'm with Joey. I don't like people taking my food, either. LOL.
I HAVE been in situations where we ordered things and agreed to share. That's different. But years ago, I knew this rich, prep-school guy who was a contractor that worked with my office, and a group of us went to lunch a few times together. He had the worst table manners ever. Talked while chewing, and would gobble down his food and then proceed to fork stuff off of other people's plates. I stabbed him in the hand with a fork when he went reaching for my food. Didn't break the skin or anything, but he got the message, and everyone at the table laughed.

Family members, little kids can get away with this. But that crap goes out the window with strangers.
If I wanted to see cud chewing, I'd go to a farm.
Try going to a Chinese/Japanese restaurant and have all silverware removed. Make everyone use chopsticks. No more food "stealing".
One piece of etiquette I learned is that if someone is buying, I don't order anything greater than theirs.
If some one is gracious enough to pay, then it is respectful not to abuse that friendship, UNLESS, they have specified that the price is ignored and to order what I want. I still don't abuse the opportunity.

I'm the same way. This reminds me of a time when I worked for a big Midwestern retail chain. Store managers were encouraged to take employees out for lunch periodically to celebrate accomplishments or just get to know them better, and allowed to turn the bill in for reimbursement. There were no limits placed on the expense, but because the company was known to micro-manage there was always the concern that a larger than typical bill for a casual lunch might come under scrutiny. Most of the employees stuck to ordering reasonably priced meals, but one of the managers kept a "steak list" with the name of every employee who ordered a steak or some other expensive entree on one of these lunches. Those employees typically weren't asked out again, or at the most they got taken someplace that didn't have high-priced items on the menu.
Yes, to add to the grip of no prices on menus... Never take food off another person's plate and please get rid of the "small plate" offerings, what a nightmare. How many times have I gone home hungry and spent all my money for so little food???

haha, seems the popular whine these days is how restaurants are supersizing portions. But this reminds me of a story. When I was young and poor I took my gf to Red Lobster. To me back then, that was one of those premium places out of my budget but it was a treat so let's go. Ordered a seafood platter that was twice the price of what I expected to pay for a meal so I was looking forward to a treat. I couldn't believe how little food was on the plate and it struck me as no better than a chain buffet. Forever tarnished ny view of them and still have never returned. I won't tolerate leaving a restaurant hungry.
On another note, I never order an "appetizer" if I can help it. They can cost almost as much as an entree and are typically super skimpy on portions.
