Nobody likes an "outsider" saying well this is not the way we did it in so and so, etc. Especially when implying the other way was better. Do not do that and all will be well regardless of going north to south, south to north, etc.

Omg... I know I've told this story on the Greenville board before, but here's a prime example of that lol.

My very own sister who lives in California comes to visit every few years, and she always has to "top" everything she sees here. And once we went to Barley's Taproom for pizza, and she kept talking about how the so & so place they get pizza from was better. Then she asked how many beers they had on tap, and off the top of my head I told her 75-80 or so.. "So & So Pub in Walnut Creek has more than that" she said..

Here's the thing though.. she doesn't even drink beer. But she just couldn't resist letting me know there was a place in CA that had more beers on tap than Barley's lol.

Don't be that person, please..

I was born in VA, moved to IL as a toddler, and worked for 10 years in VA and NC as an adult. I'm looking to move back south in a few years.

There were two kinds of northerners I met down south: those who accepted it on its own terms and assimilated, and those who spent their time hanging out with other northerners griping about how it wasn't NJ or NY or whatever. Don't move anywhere and expect it to be like the place you came from

Slow pace sounds good to us. Are people from the north welcome or snubbed. Are the coastal cities/towns more diversified than rural areas when it comes to cultures? If someone wants to display a Comfederate, why should it bother us?
If you'll be in a city you should be welcomed, but some rural areas maybe less so.

Don't let these people scare you about rural SC. No one's gonna jump out and getcha. You're level of acceptance anywhere is directly equal to your ability to accept the culture you're in and make it part of you. Smile, greet people around you, talk to strangers in the grocery line, invite folks over to your home, pick a local college team to root for, expect people to ask if you've found a church home when they notice you're new to the area, etc. You'll be fine.

Same is true of rural anywhere, not just the South; it was certainly true when I lived in New England (where you can move to a small town and still be outsiders 40 years later), and it's true here in the Midwest. I went to a wedding in a small town in Illinois years ago and afterward one of us suggested stopping by a small bar in the town. When we went in, everyone turned around and stared at us and one of us asked for a round of beers. The bartender reached behind him without breaking his stare, shut off the outside neon sign, and said: "We just closed". Maybe it was because they didn't know us, maybe because we were dressed for a wedding and not like the blue collar workers and farmers who frequented the bar. Or maybe it was just because we weren't One Of Them.

That so-called "culture shock" would be a breath of fresh air for me! Can't stand it here in the northeast.

If you have chronic medical issues of any kind, I strongly advise against moving to a small town. You’ll suffer both physically and emotionally due to negligence, malpractice and outright discrimination. The general belief in small rural areas is that health issues are the result of sin. Small towns are overwhelmingly covered by a cloud of despair, so don’t expect compassion or understanding from anyone, especially doctors. Also, if you even question a doctor’s assessment of your condition, you’ll be dropped as a patient immediately. They don’t accept medical evaluations from former doctors, even top specialists, as they want to make their own diagnosis. Your entire medical history will be ignored, which in itself is willful ignorance and negligence. Outside medical opinions are not trusted by small town doctors. You will suffer needlessly in a small town.

"why should it bother us"? Good Question...If it doesn't bother you now, why go looking for a reason?

Nfaulkos, you need to get out of the rural south. An individual with your culture and discernment should live out your days in Trenton Delaware or Pontiac Michigan, places more in tune with your station in life.
