Here is a map of the oil and gas wells in S D. ArcGIS Explorer Online
I am not sure why the google map does not show them and I am not sure why most of them do not produce any oil or gas, but there has been considerable drilling in Harding, Butte, & Fall River counties. Or does this map only show where permits to drill have been issued?
uh
I think they are only the permits issued and not actual drilling as of yet. Quite a few on the map were permits issued, holes bored and found to be dry. Nothing producing.

That is a good question. I'm not sure what that map is trying to show, but let me ask you this. You are familiar with Fall River County, every see any producing wells? I don't remember seeing any and if that map is correct, there should be plenty that you should see while driving around the hills.

Most are dry holes in the ground or exploratory holes.
Here Oil & Gas Production/Injection is another web page showing some charts about oil and gas production in S D. In summary there are 147 active oil wells in S D which produced 1,600,000 barrels of oil in 2010. Producing gas wells is just under 100 and they produced 1300 MCF [million cubic feet] of gas in 2010. There has been a steady increase in gas wells in S D since 1980. Most of them are in Harding, Butte, & Fall River counties.

Active, producing oil wells in Fall River county are located in Edgemont, Igloo, The Porter Ranch, and Alum Creek.
uh
But now the question is, is that money (energy taxation) being put to use for the school system or did they route it elsewhere? Oil, gas, wind, etc... is something that will be around for a lot of years and is perfect for education.

That is where Wyoming has a clear advantage when it comes to funding.
Thanks for posting that, it was a very interesting read. The biggest thing I got out of it is that the people that oppose it are simply opposing because they are jealous they aren't getting any. hahahaha But again, the people didn't speak about cost cutting measures that were attempted.
One thing is for sure, if they increase the tax in South Dakota, they will never decrease it. I have never seen a tax go down.

It is more about no real acountability on how the funds are used. More taxes isn't always an answer.
