Let's have a news update.

Here's 400 people in New York having a Halloween party, close packed, no masks. Does that sound selfish? Are you going to meander over to the New York forum and point it out to them, as you've been doing here?

The USA is hitting all time daily records for new covid-19 cases. New York's cases are climbing, it's on the edge of being declared a 'hot spot.' Here's New York Governor Mario Cuomo easing travel restrictions to and from New York. Does Governor Cuomo sound like he's "ignoring the science?" Maybe the New York forum would benefit from being informed of this, too.

England had a country-wide hard lock down earlier this year to get covid under control. It seems that didn't work out so well. The UK just entered another 5 week hard lock down. One may wonder, if it didn't work last time, why do the exact same thing again? Normally people understand if you do the exact same thing multiple times you tend to get the exact same result each time. If it didn't work the first time, it probably won't work the next 100 times, either. Maybe something different should be tried. Is doing the exact same thing over and over, even though it didn't work when tried previously, "listening to the science?" That sounds like the opposite of "the science" to me.

No trick or treaters here. We moved into town about 12 years ago and have had maybe 10 the entire time. I am not sure what happened this year. Usually they have the trunk or treat thing here at a few places.

Here's some information on how things are going in Germany and France that you may be unaware of. The country-wide hard lock downs they took in the Spring don't seem to have left them in very good shape to avoid a second wave.

Is New York sacrificing loved ones due to their neighbors' selfishness? They seem to be having more trouble with covid than anyone (except perhaps New Jersey).

Starting (and continuing) a thread to make a politically motivated attack thinly disguised as concern for others is very, very sad.
So it's the weekend and I'm stopping in for a few minutes. Don't have nearly enough time to re-hash everything that I and others have already covered numerous times.

JDHPA... as many times as you have posted on this thread, you really ought to pay attention. And the incessant complaining and whining is nothing more than howling at the moon. If you don't like what I and others have suggested, OFFER SOMETHING, other than criticism. NO ONE on this site will be able to educate you or probably a few others, but I demand more of our leaders than burying their heads in the sand and doing nothing. Doing nothing is not an acceptable strategy.

But it's beyond time to grow up and take responsibility for yourself and others. Wearing a mask is the absolute minimum. If you don't think it works, the next time you or a loved one goes into the hospital for an operation, insist to the surgeon and the medical team that you don't want them wearing a mask as they lean over your open surgical cavity. But I bet then, when you are the one who is sick, you'll thank God they took precautions and wore a mask.

It has been more than eight months that we've been in this pandemic and you're still arguing about basic protocols that anyone without a severe learning disability should have grasped within a 30 minute lecture. Most of my kids are not yet teens and even they have been able to grasp rudimentary science.
You asked whether New York has sacrificed loved ones due to neighbors selfishness. Of course! Again, have you not been paying attention? New York City has 8 million people. That's 10 times the population of the ENTIRE STATE of South Dakota! And they're all crammed into a space that is only one-fifth of the area of Custer County! Density has been a major culprit. And where people from all over the world gather, NYC has more than its share of narcissist's. And psychopaths and sociopaths. Generally people who only think of themselves and don't give a $h#! about anyone else. They're absolutely selfish and inconsiderate. A friend of mind up in Belle Fourche said it best when he said "REAL men take care of their tribe. Their family. Their community." Can't say I disagree with that. It's your duty. It's your obligation. It's your RESPONSIBILITY.

Right about now your hospitals are filling up, ICU's are overflowing. Some are dying before they can be airlifted to another hospital (I'm thinking of one man in particular, may he RIP.) And some people continue to define scientific protocols as "politics." As I inferred before, if I were king, this sort of callous indifference would be a punishable act.

The reds are back and they've spread right on the backs of this illness.

The reality is, there has been correlations starting to be found in the severity of the illness and the expected robustness of one's immune system. For example, cases in India are spiraling, but the severity is seemingly less. Even in Brazil, which really did nothing, we see cases trending down. There's no cure yet, but one is being developed. Treatments for the affected are already being put into place as doctors get better at treating symptoms.

It's an illness. Your best move is to be careful. Wash your hands, wear a mask as a courtesy (not law) when going out to interact with others and periodically wipe down areas where people will touch.

Stay true South Dakota. By God, you may be saving the country by example. I've never fielded so many inquiries of interest about the area locally. For the decent, I'll talk. For the obvious, I tell terrors of -50 windchills and the feeling of abandonment because no government exists, just lawless marauders living off the land, packs of wolves. However, for a nice vacation, nothing beats Rosebud in January.
Hi Artillery77, I generally agree with your post, but respectfully take issue with one statement and some might chalk it up to semantics...

Wearing a mask should not be done as a courtesy. A courtesy is opening a door for another to walk through. That is an example of a courtesy. A nicety. An act of politeness. But a mask is not one of those things. Not wearing a mask in public where others are subjected to breathing the same air as you is nothing short of being rude and inconsiderate. Not wearing a mask around strangers is not only selfish, it's tantamount to giving a giant F-YOU to those in your presence.

Especially given the soaring numbers of Covid-positive. At least South Dakota and other states can learn from the experience garnered in New York and California as to how to best treat the disease. You're Welcome, South Dakota. Sadly, it looks as too many aren't willing to benefit from the lessons learned. Nearly a quarter million dead and counting...

The truth is we should all have been working all of these eight-plus months, to protect one another. Looking out for one another -- that's what civilized people DO! How it became an embarrassing squabble and name-calling and dividing ourselves along political lines is -- well, unfortunate. We're better than this as the world ridicules us.

The best of humanity would have come together and squashed this thing back in March, instead of every state doing their own thing. It was only a matter of time before South Dakota would get slammed. NOW is that time. It's not bad compared to other states but if you're the child or the widow of the hundreds who have perished, the death toll is way too high.

Even though NOW we have a better handle on how to TREAT Covid-19, and we learned due to the terribly high price paid by New Yorkers and other early hot spots -- still too many South Dakotans are losing family members. To those who sacrificed your family members so others could express their "freedom" to go maskless, my condolences that you paid the ultimate price due to your neighbors selfishness.

My guess is until we all grow up and act in unison, we'll keep passing this thing back and forth until it dies out next summer. That's ANOTHER 8+ months away.

Lastly, we're all Americans. We're all entitled to express ourselves on this site. I've seen that sort of ugly provincialism where you aren't able to express your opinion because of where you're born and we deserve better than that. I've never met a person who doesn't have an opinion about New York and it's often not pleasant -- we have to grin and bear it and know there may be a bit of truth to it. Who amongst us is perfect?

So can we all just come together. Put your machismo aside and for the sake of your family or neighbors, put on the mask. Putting on a mask isn't going to kill you or make you look weak. It looked like SD's sparse population was going to save you, but it isn't saving everyone. In fact, too many are paying too high a price.

Sadly, the worst is yet to come and the winter is going to be long, dark and grim. Good luck!

This is so condescending! I hate when people say, “let’s come together,” but actually mean doing this YOUR way.

The American way is freedom and that means not telling anyone else what to do! You have your elected Reps - how ridiculous to tell people in another state how to live their lives.

Maybe if Cuomo hadn’t shoved Covid people in nursing homes, so many people wouldn’t have died. Then again, maybe if you guys had been a little more lax on the lockdowns, people wouldn’t be fleeing the city to go to places where they still believe in freedom.

Agreed. It's on the nursing homes for not taking more precautions given that half the covid deaths come from nursing homes. Many of them underpay their employees also. It's not a job I would want to have.

In any case we'll get herd immunity faster. By now people are aware of the risks. They can choose to minimize exposure to the virus on their own if they are scared. We don't need to hold people's hands from cradle to grave here in America, nor are we china where they point a gun to your head and tell you to stay at home. In any case I don't flat out believe China's covid numbers.

So your big complaint is there is no mask mandate.

It may surprise you to learn people wear masks even without a mandate. It may shock you to learn even with a mandate not everyone will wear a mask.

I'll go back to what I said originally. The small percentage of people in the high risk group should protect themselves, because no government mandate is going to protect them. Acting otherwise is inviting trouble. I wear a mask and I avoid people obviously in the high risk group, but if they don't protect themselves it's only a matter of time before they contract it, no matter what I or anyone else does. But that's just my suggestion to them, they're adults and they're free to make their own decision without interference.

Your faux concern for others' well being is faux appreciated. Using fake concern for others to make political attacks with no intent to be constructive is just sad.

it's on Cuomo, he sent Covid patients into nursing homes, they were directed by Cuomo to go there. If nursing homes weren't taking precautions, he should have never sent elderly people there. Amazing the lack of accountability people will carve out to find someone not responsible.

Let's have a news update.

Here's 400 people in New York having a Halloween party, close packed, no masks. Does that sound selfish? 1 Are you going to meander over to the New York forum and point it out to them, as you've been doing here?

The USA is hitting all time daily records for new covid-19 cases. New York's cases are climbing, it's on the edge of being declared a 'hot spot.' Here's 2 New York Governor Mario Cuomo easing travel restrictions to and from New York. Does Governor Cuomo sound like he's "ignoring the science?" Maybe the New York forum would benefit from being informed of this, too.

England had a country-wide hard lock down earlier this year to get covid under control. It seems 3 that didn't work out so well. The UK just entered another 5 week hard lock down. The trump administration response to covid was an abject failure. If you think the New England journal of medicine,Science and Nature editorial boards are wrong list equally esteemed scientific journals that say different.

1) this is a situation were officials mandated mitigation to decrease the spread and issued citations to violators
If you read THE TITLE OF THIS THREAD and my quote “ I think governors who ignore the science and experts and wait until deaths are spiraling out of control and hospitals are overwhelmed to begin covid mitigation Actions are incompetent.” mitigation efforts are in place in this instance

2) the article does not say he is easing restrictions let me repeat THE ARTICLE DOES NOT SAY HE IS EASING RESTRICTIONS he REPLACED travel restrictions with a testing and quarantine protocol.

3)you keep saying it did not work. Are you not aware that epidemiologist, infectious disease specialists the people with PhD and MDs predicted a fall surge?
https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/heal...of-coronavirus
https://www.wjr.com/2020/10/15/exper...v-surge-is-on/
https://www.ajc.com/news/nation-worl...A3WTNTHWZZPAU/

The only one who said there would not be a fall surge was trump. This increase was expected so it did work.

Your post is a mess.
