Arthur C. Clarke (R.I.P.) was convinced that earlier images of the Martian surface showed what appeared to be gigantic mile-wide trees - entire forests of them. He was also convinced there were giant glass tube worms as well. I haven't looked at all the new HiRISE images yet, so I don't know if the "glass tubes" are shown in the HiRISE images. I'm not sure if the idea of giant Martian trees originated by Clarke or not, but people like Richard Hoagland and others religiously tout these "trees" as proof that there is indeed life on Mars. I've always thought they were weird geologic features that were shadowed and showed signs of frost.

So much for the forests of giant Martian trees.
